Comlurb celebrates International Composting Week with activities and the launch of an organic waste separation and collection project

From Tuesday to Friday (May 2-5), Comlurb is holding a series of events to celebrate International Composting Week, including a seminar, guided tours and the implementation of an organic waste segregation project at the company's headquarters in Tijuca. On Tuesday (May 5), the project to separate and compost organic waste generated in the headquarters' cafeteria will be launched, in partnership with Ciclo Orgânico and Composta'e, which collect waste from homes using tricycles. The idea is to do the homework and encourage other companies and organizations to do the same.

Employees who eat lunch on site will receive instructions on how to separate and dispose of leftover food in the bins that will be installed on site. All waste will be collected and composted by Ciclo Orgânico and Composta'e, helping to reduce CO2 emissions from the transportation and landfilling of waste at CTR-Rio.

The following day, the company will hold the Rio de Janeiro Composters Meeting at EcoParque do Caju, bringing together specialists from Comlurb, city departments, universities and institutions involved in the topic. Speakers include Jeferson Pecin, Environmental Restoration Manager at the Municipal Department of Environment and Climate; Caio Teves, researcher at Embrapa; and Paulo Monteiro, Project Coordinator at Fundação Angélica Goulart, in addition to companies specializing in composting: Vide Verde and OrganoSolo.

On Thursday (4/5), Comlurb will be offering a guided tour of EcoParque do Caju, which houses several of the company's sustainable programs, such as the first Biomethanization Unit in Latin America, which transforms organic waste into energy and organic compost, Fertilub, for soil regeneration. The super fertilizer is also used as a substrate for seedling nurseries, urban gardens, as an input for reforestation of the Tijuca Forest and for the maintenance of the city's squares and gardens. EcoParque do Caju also has modern equipment for processing pruning waste from the city, which produces biomass fuel, a source of thermal energy for ceramic industry kilns.

The last day (5/5) will be dedicated to a technical visit to the Comlurb Research Center in Vargem Pequena, where the laboratories for Physical-Chemical Analysis, Microbiological Analysis, Biological Analysis, and Solid Waste Characterization operate, in addition to a vegetable garden that produces plant seedlings and organic compounds. The research work on Household Solid Waste in the City of Rio de Janeiro characterizes household waste from urban areas, beaches, and communities, revealing consumption profiles, behaviors, changes in habits, and economic situation. The Center is also responsible for quality control of the materials used in the Company's work and for the vector control service.
