With this, the company now has three new voluntary waste drop-off points this year – the Chacrinha Eco-point was inaugurated on January 2nd in Praça Seca. The eco-points represent a historic advance in Rio's environmental policy and, thanks to them and the installation of 15,000 high-capacity containers throughout the city, Comlurb has already recorded 28% less litter thrown on the streets, equivalent to approximately 2.200 tons of waste per day that now have the correct destination. In addition to helping with waste management, recycling centers also prevent the spread of disease, leading to a better quality of life for residents and improved public health. Installed mainly in communities, these spaces have compacting bins for household waste and multi-purpose bins for construction debris and unusable items such as furniture, mattresses, and appliances, as well as tree branches.
The inauguration of the Rocinha recycling centers featured a performance by the group Chegando de Surpresa, composed of sanitation workers who use music and dance in awareness campaigns.
