Galpão das Artes Urbanas hosts an installation in honor of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day.

Installation “The Mermaid and the Cry of the Oceans”, by artist Carla Carvalhosa - Courtesy of Comlurb The installation “The Mermaid and the Cry of the Oceans”, by artist Carla Carvalhosa, arrives this Monday (June 8th) at the Hélio G. Pellegrino Urban Arts Warehouse, run by Comlurb, in celebration of World Environment Day – June 5th and World Oceans Day – June 8th. The installation poetically and representatively portrays the impact of humankind on the seas. The Warehouse thus navigates waters full of purpose and urgent messages about caring for one of our greatest global assets, the oceans, and becomes part of the mobilization to prevent the dumping of waste in the seas.
The mermaid sculpture was made from repurposed plastic packaging, PET bottles, cardboard, newspaper, broom handle, wire, acrylic paste, and glue, using papier-mâché techniques. Other waste materials are also part of the artwork, representing the discarded trash found everywhere on Planet Earth.
Visual artist Carla Carvalhosa, born in Rio de Janeiro, has been dedicated to environmental advocacy since a young age. For 30 years, she has taught courses, training numerous artists and using art as a tool for art therapy. Throughout her career, she has developed various painting techniques on canvas and other materials. During the pandemic, Carla became concerned about the amount of waste accumulating at home. From this problem arose a solution that would help not only her home but the planet, transforming waste into art. All this waste that would have been discarded was repurposed to create a critical metaphor in the form of sculptures and paintings.
The idea became a message with significant meaning for contemporary sustainability through her works. The relevance of the subject led Galpão das Artes to invite the artist to contribute to the reflection and the objective of conveying this important message that waste doesn't go somewhere else in the universe; it has become a guest that we need to treat for the good of our planet.
