Comlurb's cleaning campaign with Águas do Rio removes 2,5 tons of trash from the Caju mangrove swamp - Disclosure/ Águas do Rio Focused on environmental recovery, a clean-up effort that began on Wednesday (16/10) removed 5,2 tons of waste from a stretch of mangrove swamp on the Caju Peninsula, in the city's Port Zone. The work is being carried out by Comlurb and the concessionaire Águas do Rio.
The service involved five workers and a supervisor from Águas do Rio, and 16 street cleaners and two urban cleaning agents from Comlurb. It is being carried out under the supervision of biologist Mário Moscatelli, who coordinates the environmental recovery of the site. The waste was transported in a Comlurb compactor truck.
Simply removing the trash allows the mangrove area to recover very quickly. With the cleaning, the trees start producing seeds again, which fall into the mud and produce new seedlings. This time of year is a good time for the seeds to bloom. One of the positive consequences of regeneration is the return of wildlife to the area, especially capybaras.
The goal of the cleanup effort is to recover four of the six hectares and begin expanding the mangrove swamp by another 3,6 hectares. Mangrove areas are essential for the biodiversity of Guanabara Bay, for the issue of carbon sequestration and accumulation, as well as being the coast's only line of defense in times of extreme weather.
