New type of grass will beautify the city and reduce the effort of garden sweepers

After three months of successful testing, Comlurb will use peanut grass (Arachis repens) in the central median of Avenida Brasil. This herbaceous plant native to Brazil does not require frequent mowing, reducing the physical effort required by street cleaners and equipment costs. In addition, it provides greater protection for street cleaners, since mowing on these busy roads carries the risk of accidents, such as being run over, since it can only be done at night to avoid disrupting traffic.

Mayor Eduardo Paes made the initiative official in decree No. 52178, published in the Official Gazette on March 17, prioritizing planting in express corridors, tunnel entrances, slopes, hanging gardens, access to overpasses, and BRT and BRS medians. In addition to being beautiful, the species combats soil erosion, retains nitrogen, recovers nutrients from the soil, and prevents the proliferation of weeds. Peanut grass is suitable for ornamental purposes and for covering urban green areas, forming a dense green mattress with delicate yellow flowers.

Comlurb has already obtained 1,5 million seedlings from the Environment Department to plant on Avenida Brasil, from Deodoro to the Oscar Brito viaduct. Fertilub, a super fertilizer developed at Comlurb's Caju EcoPark, from the reuse of organic waste at the Biomethanization Unit, the first in Latin America, will be used for planting. Fertilub has been used in municipal projects for community and school gardens, family farming, seedling nurseries, reforestation and landscaping of parks and gardens.
