The Wallace Fountain, in the City Park, underwent cleaning and maintenance _ Marcos de Paula/City Hall of Rio

After cleaning and maintaining 13 monuments in the South Zone between January and the first week of March, the Municipal Conservation Department (Seconserva) will carry out the same action on other sculptures, such as the one of Padre Cícero, in Campo de São Cristóvão. The Parque da Cidade, in Gávea, concentrated most of this work, which was initiated by Lagoa, Flamengo, Leblon and Copacabana, through the Monuments and Fountains Management.

The monuments that received this care are the Wallace Fountain, the Woman's Candelabra, the Indian Candelabra, the Hotchkiss Cannon, the Abstract Sculpture Contemplation, and the Indian Fountain, in the City Park, in Gávea; the Fountain and the Statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, in Largo do Machado; the Fountain A Fonte, in Praça São Salvador; the Monument to Estácio de Sá, in Aterro do Flamengo; the Statue of Nelson Rodrigues, in Copacabana; the Bust of Afrânio de Melo Franco and the Statue of Miguel Couto, in Leblon; and the Bust of the Rebouças Brothers, in Lagoa.

The inspections identified that a major obstacle to keeping monuments and fountains in perfect condition is vandalism. Graffiti and theft of parts are among the biggest problems faced by technicians.
