Operation Abre Ralo: Conservation Department and Comlurb map and clean more than 350 points in flood prevention action

The Rio Municipal Department of Conservation and Public Services, in partnership with the City Hall Operations Center (COR) and Comlurb, are carrying out Operation Abre Ralo this week, a special task force to clean up critical flooding points in Rio. More than 350 points have already been visited and resolved in recent days, preparing the city for the rains.

Operation Abre Ralo focuses on unclogging drains and manholes that have caused additional difficulties for the teams that are carrying out Operation Ralo Limpo, which involves the enhanced cleaning of the city's storm water drains, and also for the city's routine street sweepers. The mapping of the points was done with the help of the Rio Operations Center, which identified the pockets of water, and Comlurb, which mapped the drains with stuck or broken covers or that presented other difficulties for the cleaning action.

– In this action, Comlurb manually cleans the drains, opening them and removing solid waste. Conservation then performs mechanical cleaning, using suction to unclog storm drains and their respective branches – explains the Secretary of Conservation, Diego Vaz.

The prevention work aims to mitigate flooding episodes based on the recent history of rainfall in Rio. – We have a forecast of heavy rain for this Wednesday. We always try to act in areas where previous rainfall has been recurring. All affected areas in the Center and South Zone have undergone preventive work. The deputy mayors also provided information on the North Zone, West Zone, Barra da Tijuca and Jacarepaguá – he adds.

The teams will be on duty throughout the night to act in cases that go beyond the mapped risks.
