The square in Magalhães Bastos was completely revitalized - Rio City Hall

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Conservation Department, has handed over another fully redeveloped leisure area to the people of Rio. This Wednesday, the General João Severiano da Fonseca Square in Magalhães Bastos was reopened. Located near Adilson Santos Ferreira Street, the square has a multi-sports court, a set of exercise equipment and a Senior Citizens' Gym, among other improvements. The investment was R$410.

– Another important delivery, it’s great to see the kids happy. It’s a space for fun, leisure and socializing for families. It was an area that was not being used and now has children and families present, in yet another revitalization of a public area carried out by the City Hall that the population will be able to enjoy – highlighted the Municipal Secretary of Conservation, Marco Aurélio Regalo.

Over the course of three months of construction, the square has regained its vocation as a place for outdoor recreation and fun. For sports, a multi-sports court with fencing and a safety net was installed, providing greater safety for children and adults. Those who enjoy exercising in an open space can choose from a set of exercise equipment, with a parallel bar, two abdominal boards and a double bar, and a Seniors' Gym. And children have their own space, where a double slide, a swing, a seesaw, a climbing frame and a climbing frame were installed, in addition to the restoration of the existing wooden toys, installed by Comlurb, and the application of sandy gravel on the playground floor.

– The renovation of General Severiano Square has been a long-standing promise, since the time the Transolímpica was inaugurated. The population of the Curral community and others nearby are very happy with this achievement – said the deputy mayor of Greater Bangu, Robson do Chocolate.

The square's redevelopment project included the installation of a kiosk, 12 concrete benches and four sets of game tables and concrete benches. Services were also carried out to install interlocking flooring, build and repair concrete sidewalks, plant peanut grass in the tree collars, install bicycle racks, install accessibility ramps and install reinforced concrete flooring.

Student João Victor Oliveira Santos, 16, was thrilled with the new leisure space. A resident of Coelho Neto, he says he has finally found a court to play basketball, his favorite sport.

– I have a group of friends who play basketball, which is not very common, usually people like soccer and volleyball more. And the closest place for us to play is in Sulacap. When I was passing by on the bus, I saw that they were building a court. Here it is much better, because besides being closer, everything is brand new, there are even markings on the floor, which other courts don't have, we have to guess the markings – said João Victor, who studies at Pedro II, a school that is close to the square.

The action in Praça General João Severiano da Fonseca was supported by Comlurb, which pruned the trees, installed waste bins and worked on mowing the grass beds and general cleaning, and by Rioluz, which installed LED lights, modernizing the lighting in the area.
