Close to completing 120 years, the Relógio da Glória, one of the most emblematic symbols of the traditional neighborhood of Glória, in the South Zone, will undergo a complete renovation to guarantee the conservation and functionality of its structure. The intervention will be carried out by the Monuments Management, of the Municipal Department of Conservation and Public Services, starting this Monday (27/1), with the objective of preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the city.

The work, which should last a month, involves repairs to the original mechanism and the removal of rainwater from the upper cast iron box.

– Rio is destined to be an open-air museum. As the city celebrates its 460th anniversary, we are restoring the city’s first public clock, a treasure that is now 120 years old – said the Secretary of Conservation and Public Services, Diego Vaz.

About the watch

Opened on April 15, 1905, during one of the landmarks of Rio de Janeiro's urban development during the Old Republic, the Relógio da Glória is located at the southern end of the balustrade on Rua da Glória and is supported by a carved stone column that is integrated into this balustrade. It is a Krussman clock with four luminous dials, whose mechanism still works in its original state, and for this reason it requires constant specialized services. This is the only clock in the city that preserves its original mechanism.

On the access door to the machine there is the following inscription: “Built under the Administration of Mayor Pereira Passos – 1905”. The monument is listed by the State Institute of Cultural Heritage (INEPAC).
