- Rio City Hall intensifies Operation Summer on the beaches of Barra de Guaratiba, Recreio and Barra da Tijuca
Once these spaces reach their maximum capacity, the Municipal Guard's traffic team will block the entry of cars, directing drivers to Estrada do Pontal. The Public Order Department (SEOP) may call for tow trucks in emergency situations and will also monitor additional transportation (vans and tourist buses). The traffic plan is expected to be maintained on weekends and summer holidays.
– It is very important to highlight that, during closing times, access to the beach will be free for swimmers and residents, while ride-hailing services will only be allowed with proof of travel. We would like to emphasize that the city belongs to everyone and that these measures, which respond to a request from residents and local businesses, are to guarantee the mobility, safety and well-being of the population of Rio de Janeiro, highlighted the municipal secretary of Government Coordination, Edson Menezes.
The operation will be carried out in two stages. The first stage begins at 6 am on Saturday (25/01), with the closure of access to the roundabout on Rua Roberto Burle Max (Ponte Velha da Marambaia), allowing only buses and residents who present proof of residence to enter until 22 pm. The second stage will begin at 9 am, when access via Serra do Grumari, on Avenida Roberto Burle Max, will be closed, with the same time restrictions. The traffic scheme will be repeated on Sunday (26/01).
Operation Summer on the beaches of the West Zone seeks to guarantee the safety of citizens and environmental preservation, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of the region with quality, in a responsible and sustainable manner.
Participating in the operation: Public Order Secretariat, Municipal Guard, CET-Rio, Transport Secretariat, Government Coordination Secretariat and the sub-prefectures of West Zone 3 and Barra da Tijuca, in addition to support from the Military Police.
About Operation Summer
Operation Summer began in September 2024. Last weekend and the holiday alone (January 18-20), the Public Order Department and the Municipal Guard seized more than a thousand items from illegal street vendors, including drinks in glass bottles and clothing, in actions throughout the city's coastline.
More than 1.500 fines were issued and 183 vehicles were towed for illegal parking. In Copacabana and Leme alone, there were 48 citations against stallholders for various infractions, and 35 barbecue grills were seized.
The agents also instructed 54 bathers to turn off their speakers and seized an inflatable balloon in Copacabana. Around 660 identification bracelets were also distributed and 32 illegal camps were broken up along the coast.
