Tourism Panel will facilitate monitoring of the most visited areas of Rio de Janeiro

Photo: Marcelo Piu The Rio City Hall, through the Municipal Department of Tourism (SMTUR-Rio), is launching the Tourism Dashboard this Wednesday (December 04). The project, in partnership with the Municipal Guard and the Rio Operations Center (COR), aims to monitor the city's tourist areas. The dashboard will be strategically located in the COR Situation Room and will operate 12 hours a day, monitoring 24 cameras distributed throughout Orla Conde, Boulevard Olímpico, Urca/Pão de Açúcar, Escadaria Selarón, Arcos da Lapa and Praça São Judas Tadeu, in Cosme Velho, where the Corcovado train station is located.
The municipal guards will take turns monitoring the cameras 24 hours a day, and they can be manipulated to obtain the best view of the point being observed. With an exclusive space on the COR screen, the largest in Latin America, the initiative aims to provide an exclusive view for monitoring tourist areas.
– Rio has everything to gain from direct dialogue between the Department of Tourism, COR and the Municipal Guard. This is a project we have been working on since 2023 and which represents progress in protection and also in increasing the feeling of security for our visitors -, says Daniela Maia, Municipal Secretary of Tourism.
The project is already being planned for expansion. The City Hall will soon increase the number of guards, cameras and areas covered. The project will begin in regions already monitored by GTUR, a group of managers of tourist areas from SMTUR-Rio that oversees these tourist attractions from the point of view of infrastructure and accessibility.
The Operations Center already monitors public assets. With the creation of the Tourism Panel, the 77 cameras allocated to the project will be visible on the left corner of the Situation Room. Agents will also have access to all equipment on their monitors.
– COR’s keyword is integration. Since we have agencies from all spheres sitting side by side, whenever we notice any suspicious movement we will immediately contact the Municipal Guard and security agencies to understand the real situation occurring on the streets, more specifically in these tourist spots that are so important to the city -, highlights COR’s chief executive, Marcus Belchior.
Hospitality Training
To enhance this work, SMTUR-Rio held its first seminar “City, Tourism and Hospitality” in November. The training and awareness-raising initiative was given to 65 municipal guards, including professionals from the Tourist Support Group (GAT) and the Operational Control Management (GCO), which works at COR, since one of the functions of the agency is to provide support and guidance to tourists, both Brazilian and foreign. The seminar was held in partnership with the Municipal Secretariat for Public Order (SEOP), Rio Operations Center (COR), Municipal Guard (GM-Rio) and the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Unirio).
The objective of the seminar was to improve the quality of service, with well-informed and qualified agents who would be sensitive to sociocultural differences, strengthening tourism and contributing to the construction of a more welcoming and hospitable city. The meeting lasted a whole day and was held at the Windsor Leme Hotel, in Copacabana, in the city's South Zone. The guards received notions and knowledge about tourism, security, hospitality and otherness, as well as history, geography and culture about the city, in classes given by professors from Unirio and the Fluminense Federal University (UFF).
– The Municipal Guard already has expertise in monitoring actions in the COR and also in patrolling the city's tourist attractions, with our GAT staff. The training offered by the Tourism Department and the partnership in the Tourism Panel at the COR will help to improve the work and bring more security to national and foreign visitors and to the citizens of Rio who also frequent these areas -, highlights the commander of GM-Rio, inspector general José Ricardo Soares.
The initiative is the first step in a partnership that aims to be ongoing between SMTUR-Rio and GM-Rio. In this first year, the lectures were recorded and will be part of a tourism and hospitality course that will be integrated into the distance learning curriculum and will be accessible to the entire contingent of the Municipal Guard. The idea is that the seminar will be incorporated into the routine of both departments and will take place at least once a year, with the objective of exchanging knowledge and best practices to improve services and the quality of service to our visitors.
