Rio's birthday: check out a list of ten places that are popular with Cariocas

To celebrate the 458th anniversary of the city of Rio de Janeiro, this Wednesday (1/3), we have put together a list of ten attractions that locals and tourists can enjoy in their leisure time for free or at very little cost. These are municipal facilities spread throughout the city, with a very varied program. Among the spaces, there are natural parks, museums and theaters with various activities that are worth a visit. Check them out!

 

 

Rio Art Museum (Mauá Square)

Opened on March 1, 2013, the Rio Art Museum (MAR) celebrates its 10th anniversary this Wednesday. To mark the occasion, all exhibitions will be free of charge.

Located in Praça Mauá, the space has a very varied program, with courses, seminars, exhibitions and lecture series, among others.

“A Color Defect” is MAR’s main exhibition at the moment. It is an interpretation of the book of the same name by Minas Gerais writer Ana Maria Gonçalves, which tells the story of an African woman named Kehinde who, in Brazil, must fight for her freedom and rebuild her life.

MAR is located at Praça Mauá, 5, in the city center. It is open from Thursday to Sunday, from 11 am to 18 pm, and admission is free for groups such as public school students, children up to 5 years old, people aged 60 or over, and municipal school teachers, among others.

Ruins Park (Santa Teresa)

In addition to a varied cultural program, the Parque das Ruínas Cultural Center has a panoramic view of the city that is worth a visit. From the top of the lookout, you can see Guanabara Bay, Botafogo Cove and Sugarloaf Mountain, among other points of Rio.

The ruins of the park are the remains of the Palacete Murtinho Nobre, built between 1898 and 1902. The home of Laurinda Santos Lobo, heiress of the Companhia Matte Laranjeira, the mansion was a meeting point for modernism in Rio de Janeiro during the 1920s, and also one of the most frequented places of cultural life in Rio until the mid-XNUMXth century. These parties brought together celebrities and prominent figures of the time.

This Wednesday, the children's show “Gramellôs – O Show” is free. Also on display until March 19 is the exhibition of the “I Prêmio de Fotografia – Visões Cariocas”.

The Parque das Ruínas Cultural Center is located at Rua Murtinho Nobre, 169, in Santa Teresa. It is open from Thursday to Sunday, from 9 am to 16 pm, with free admission.

Madureira Master Monarco Park (Madureira)

Stretching over 3,15 km, Parque Madureira Mestre Monarco brings fun, leisure and culture to the region. It has volleyball, basketball and football courts, as well as a field for football matches, as well as fountains, streams, kiosks, a skate park, an orchard and playgrounds. The park, which runs alongside the railway line that runs through the neighborhood, also has the Arena Carioca and Praça do Samba.

Darke de Mattos Municipal Natural Park (Paquetá Island)

The Darke de Mattos Municipal Natural Park occupies an area of ​​seven hectares on Paquetá Island. There is a lookout point and the Augusto Ruscki circular trail. Originally, the island was covered by the Atlantic Forest, and the park was created to preserve Morro da Cruz and the area's vegetation cover, which was reduced due to mineral exploration in past centuries. The beautiful tunnels found in the area date back to the time when slaves used to extract kaolin. Near Morro da Cruz is the Palco da Lua, an events venue and a small amphitheater with stone benches.

The space is open for picnics. Opening hours are from 6 am to 17 pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

 

 

Marapendi Municipal Natural Park (Bandeirantes Recreation Area)

The Marapendi PNM is entirely located within the domains of the Atlantic Dense Ombrophilous Forest, with the dominant formation being vegetation with marine influence, generically called restinga vegetation, an ecosystem characteristic of coastal areas.

Its structure includes a library, science room, bathrooms, auditorium and art room, as well as a 13-meter-high observation tower, whose main function is to monitor the local flora and fauna, in addition to serving as an environmental monitoring, surveillance and biodiversity research point. The area has three trails: beach butterfly, jacupemba and sloth.

The address is Avenida Baltazar da Silveira 635, Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Visiting hours are from Tuesday to Sunday, from 6 am to 17 pm. It is closed to the public on Mondays, with only internal activities.

 

 

City History Museum (Gávea)

Created as a reflection of the expansion of museums in the 24th century, its origins are linked to the beginning of the Republic in Brazil and the role of political center that Rio de Janeiro played in this context. Its vast documentary, archival and museum collection brings together around XNUMX thousand pieces. It contains works by renowned artists such as Visconti, Thomas Ender, Antônio Parreiras, Armando Vianna, Augusto Malta and Marc Ferrez, in addition to the collections of mayors Pereira Passos, Pedro Ernesto, Carlos Sampaio and Cesar Maia.

Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture – Muhcab (Gamboa)

Muhcab is a museum of territory, located in Little Africa, with Valongo Wharf, a World Heritage Site, as its starting point. The museum aims to tell the story of the region that witnessed the largest landing of enslaved Africans in the world, of important milestones in the affirmation of black people in Brazil and the development of Afro-Brazilian culture, as well as to discuss concepts that emanate from this narrative and the situation of black people in Brazil today.

Carlos Werneck Puppet Theater (Aterro do Flamengo)

Opened in 1966 and listed as a Historic Heritage site, the Carlos Werneck Puppet Theater was designed based on one of the types of Guignol Theater in Paris. Its priority program is for all types of puppet theater, offering free shows on weekends. The space, which is part of the Culture with Children program, was reopened in February.

Rio Planetarium

Opened in 1970, the Rio de Janeiro Planetarium Foundation aims to create an enchanting and unforgettable experience through science and culture for all audiences. Today, visitors can enjoy outdoor gardens and parks to enjoy the day, learn about the sundial and even have a picnic.

Inside, visitors can experience the Museum of the Universe, which houses a variety of interactive experiments and traveling exhibits. Dome sessions with films about the planets and the universe add a special touch to this visit.

City of Arts

The building designed by French architect Christian de Portzamparc, built ten meters above the ground, in the heart of Barra da Tijuca, houses one of the most important and complete spaces for the representation of the arts.
