On Black Awareness Day, the City Hall delivers the renovated Renascença Clube, a symbol of Black resistance in Rio de Janeiro.

On the day the country celebrates Black Consciousness Day, the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture beats even stronger. The Rio de Janeiro City Hall delivered, this Thursday (November 20th), the complete revitalization of the Renascença Clube, one of the most important symbols of resistance, coexistence, and celebration of Black culture in Rio.

With an investment of approximately R$ 4 million, the municipality returns to the city a renovated, modern, and fully accessible "Rena," prepared to continue writing new chapters in Black culture and samba.

The project, carried out by the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe), under the coordination of the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat (SMI), was implemented in an area of ​​2,1 square meters and included the modernization of the entire physical structure, accessibility improvements, upgrades to the electrical and plumbing installations, and the creation of new spaces for social interaction and remembrance.

Formed in the early 1950s in the North Zone, the club is recognized for its historical importance, having been the stage for legendary gatherings and meetings of artists and intellectuals who helped preserve and strengthen the popular identity of Rio.

A new era for a cultural heritage of Rio de Janeiro.

The interventions included structural and aesthetic reforms in all sectors. At the entrance, access was widened, a new ticket window was created, a second floor was built to house the administrative office and break room, and a new facade with metal panels was installed, along with air conditioning in the administrative area.

In the outdoor area, the flooring was completely replaced with reinforced concrete and porcelain tiles, and the drainage system was redone. The covered sports court received a new laser-leveled concrete floor, painting and markings, roof renovation, installation of wind-powered exhaust fans, and adaptation of the restrooms into modern and accessible changing rooms.

The administrative building underwent a complete renovation. On the ground floor, the Dr. Sebastiana Arruda Memory Center, which documents the club's history, gained a new multipurpose room, accessible restrooms, and an elevator. On the upper floors, the administrative and media rooms were renovated, new VIP boxes were created, and a new kitchen and barbecue area was added, with a metal roof and glass railings.

All electrical, plumbing, and lighting installations were also updated by Rio-Urbe, with LED luminaires and new distribution panels, ensuring efficiency and sustainability.

A space for celebrating Black culture.

More than just a club, Renascença is a landmark in Rio's history. The organization was born as a space of refuge and resistance during a period when the presence of the Black population was still limited in many social environments in the city. Over time, the organization transformed into a true cradle of samba and Afro-Brazilian culture, bringing together legendary names such as Martinho da Vila, Dona Ivone Lara, Elza Soares, Nei Lopes, and Candeia, among many others who helped shape the musical and cultural identity of the city.
