Mayor participates in the opening ceremony of the International Book Biennial

Paes: 'Brazil needs to invest more and more in reading' - Beth Santos/City of Rio Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes and the Secretaries of Culture, Marcus Faustini, and Education, Renan Ferreirinha, participated in the opening ceremony of the International Book Biennial on Friday (3/12) at Riocentro, in Barra da Tijuca, which runs until December 12. The Biennial is in its 20th edition following all health protocols, with a limit on the number of visitors per shift and the need to present proof of vaccination, in addition to the mandatory use of masks. The City of Rio is participating in the program with actions by several departments in two stands, in addition to encouraging reading, with the distribution of more than R$12 million in cards for the purchase of books for students, teachers and the 1.561 units of the Municipal Network.
– On behalf of the people of Rio, I would like to apologize to those who organize the Biennial for the absurdities that occurred in 2019, in terms of prejudice, intolerance and censorship, which are unacceptable in our country. Brazil needs to increasingly invest in reading, and Rio is doing just that – highlighted Mayor Eduardo Paes.
The opening ceremony was also attended by literary figures such as writer Zuenir Ventura, who was honored by the National Union of Book Publishers (SNEL) and the Biennial's organizers for having been present throughout the festival's history. Supreme Court Justice Carmen Lúcia was also honored with the José Olympio Award, which has been given to individuals and institutions with notable contributions to the Brazilian publishing market since 1983. With her vote in the STF, the justice guaranteed the country's authors full freedom to publish unauthorized biographies. An estimated 400 people are expected to visit the stands of 85 publishers and 140 labels, spread across three pavilions at Riocentro over the 10 days.
Students, teachers and units of the Network will have cards to purchase books
All 40.700 students from the Municipal Education Network who will visit the Biennial will receive a R$20 card to purchase books. The 34.667 teachers from the Network were also given a R$200 card to purchase books, which can be purchased at the event or in the online store.
Cards for purchasing books for their respective collections will also be made available to the 1.561 administrative units (schools, daycare centers and extension centers), with values ranging from R$1.000 to R$1.600. In total, more than R$12 million will be allocated to this action by the Municipal Department of Education (SME).
– The Biennial is the fourth largest event in the city of Rio de Janeiro, second only to New Year's Eve, Carnival and Rock in Rio. For us in Education, it is the most important of all, by far. A space not only for dreams, but for achievements – declared the Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha.
The SME will also have a 100 m² stand, located in the Orange Pavilion (D 3 to C 2). The program includes discussion groups, interviews, storytelling, workshops and special guests include writers Otávio Júnior, Aline Pachamama, Sônia Travassos and Carmem Moreira, as well as teachers and representatives of special areas of the secretariat.
City Hall stand focuses on black literature
Set up in the Blue Pavilion (F02 to G03) in 100 m², one of the City Hall's stands is an arena to welcome artists, parents, educators, researchers, scholars, storytellers, reading mediators and authors. In the space, the Municipal Department of Culture is promoting the 29th edition of the Paixão de Ler festival, inviting names from black literature that deal with identities, representations and ancestry, from Babu Santana to Conceição Evaristo, passing through Helena Theodoro, Anjinho do Flamengo and Zezé Motta, among others.
With capacity for up to one hundred people, the stand will also be occupied by actions from the secretariats of Women, Youth and Government and Public Integrity (Fundação Planetário, Riofilme, Sexual Diversity and Racial Equality), which alternate in the opening hours: from 10 am to 22 pm.
– Culture is present at the Biennial with the Paixão de Ler stand completely dedicated to the debate on black children’s and young adult literature. We are also hosting activities from other departments. With this, we demonstrate that the City Hall is an ally of books, and that the Biennial is one of the greatest cultural assets of our city, which should be supported because, above all, it generates inclusion, jobs, income and development – stated the Secretary of Culture, Marcus Faustini.
The opening will be with a tribute to the writer from Rio de Janeiro, Sonia Rosa, known for her black affective literature for children and young people, including the collection “Lembranças africanas” (Pallas Editora), started in 2004. After the Biennial, the Paixão de Ler festival will extend to the Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture (Muhcab), in Gamboa, and in 16 other cultural facilities of the SMC, from December 16 to 19.
Among the highlights of the program at the Biennial stand are artistic interventions followed by debates promoted by JUVRio, on topics such as the prison system and art breaking down barriers. The Special Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion proposes dialogues between generations of black writers and artists, a creative writing dynamic for the public. Among the dynamics of the Executive Coordination for the Promotion of Racial Equality there will be a conversation circle with children from terreiros about their experiences inside and outside of school. The Planetarium Foundation of the City will promote six meetings in the space, with debates on topics such as decolonial astronomy.
