City Hall reopens the Marques Rebelo Municipal Library, in Tijuca

The library is located at Rua Guapeni, number 6, in Tijuca - Samuel Barcelos/SMC Famous for attracting readers of all ages and being a space for neighborhood reading, the Marques Rebelo Municipal Library, in Tijuca, was reopened by the City Hall, via the Department of Culture, on the morning of this Wednesday (20/12), after four years closed due to the effects of the pandemic. The facility underwent repairs such as replacing the roof, painting the interior and facade, electrical inspection, installing air conditioning and rebuilding the wall. The investment was R$441 thousand.
The reopening is part of the Libraries of Tomorrow program, from the Department of Culture, which aims to recover and modernize libraries and reading rooms in Rio. The total investment is R$30 million.
– When we talk about culture, we don’t just mean having a cool theater or a library, but giving people the energy to produce their own culture. The city of Rio de Janeiro is a reference for the country in terms of public policies in culture, everything we do here is looked at with a magnifying glass – highlighted the Secretary of Culture, Marcelo Calero.
Libraries, according to Calero, are very important, even in the face of the dominance of digital media.
– It may all be virtual, but having a book in your hand means being able to enter this dream world, this world different from everyday life, it can broaden your horizons and gain repertoire. Those who read write well, use writing and reading as a tool for learning and improving academic performance. All of this is part of our mission as the Department of Culture and as a library.
Founded in 1979, Marques Rebelo has 16 thousand items, including books, magazines and newspapers. To mark the reopening, there was a reading circle with group 3 in the Circle – De Tudo Quanto Ali Deixei, which addresses topics such as immigration and refugees, with texts by authors from Haiti, Venezuela, Portugal, Ukraine, Uruguay, Trinidad and Tobago, among others. The research and mediation were carried out by Maria Coelho and Eduardo Ramos, the music is by Adriana Martins and the original composition by Vinícius Castro.
– Giving this Christmas gift to this neighborhood, the reopened library, will attract activity for the coming days, months and years. Books are the gateway to citizenship, we can gain a perspective of the world from the moment we read a book – commented Aladia Araújo, Book and Reading Manager at the department.

He belongs to the luxurious gallery of true-to-life novelists from Rio de Janeiro, in the line of succession of Manuel Antônio de Almeida, Machado de Assis and Lima Barreto.
