The newest public reading space has more than seven thousand titles and computers with internet access - Samuel Barcelos/SMC The Municipal Department of Culture (SMC) opened the Ziraldo Municipal Library on Wednesday (July 3) inside the Cidade das Artes in Barra da Tijuca. The city's new public reading space used to function as a reading room, but is now part of the Rio City Hall's Bibliotecas do Amanhã project, which aims to restore and modernize municipal units.
Accessibility, technology, collections and cultural enjoyment are the four pillars of the Bibliotecas do Amanhã. Reading is the gateway to exercising citizenship. The investment is over R$30 million, resources that include the acquisition of collections, including accessible ones, new furniture, structural renovations and the implementation of an educational and cultural program for each space. The idea is that the libraries and reading rooms serve as places of enjoyment and cultural production, as well as a space for study and community integration. All of them lend books free of charge; all you need to do is bring a 3×4 photo and proof of residence.
The Ziraldo Municipal Library offers a collection of over seven thousand titles, computers with internet access and a large space where readers can enjoy a place of social interaction and knowledge. The library also houses an important collection of works by the renowned cartoonist, illustrator, writer and journalist from Minas Gerais (1932-2024), who left a significant legacy for the artistic and cultural scene in Brazil.
The Rio City Hall is delivering a series of renovation, modernization and requalification works to 22 of its 60 cultural facilities. This is part of the Culture of Tomorrow program, the largest investment by the Department of Culture, exceeding R$75 million.
– We decided to transform our reading room into the Ziraldo Municipal Library to increase users’ access to our books and events, especially in an area lacking libraries like the West Zone. We will be able to reach more people with activities to encourage reading and help prepare Rio to become the World Book Capital in 2025. As our dear Ziraldo used to say, the important thing is to motivate children to read, to have the adventure of reading – said the president of Cidade das Artes, Daniela Santa Cruz.
The reading unit is a tribute to the creator of famous characters, such as Menino Maluquinho and one of the most acclaimed children's writers of his time, who passed away at the age of 91, in April of this year.
The City of Arts is located at Avenida das Américas, 5300, Barra da Tijuca. The Ziraldo Municipal Library is open from Tuesday to Friday, from 10 am to 18 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, from 10 am to 19 pm.
