Ipanema Rubens Corrêa Theater reopens modernized and renamed - Samuel Barcelos/ Municipal Department of Culture

After undergoing extensive renovation and modernization, the Ipanema Theater, in the South Zone of Rio, was reopened on Thursday night (4/7). The theater opened in 1968, built on the land where the mother of actor, director and theater producer Rubens Corrêa lived, underwent the largest construction project in its history, an investment of approximately R$4 million. And it was renamed Teatro Ipanema Rubens Corrêa.

The new look includes a complete renovation of the auditorium, replacement of the seats and acoustic treatment, as well as new dressing rooms and backstage area, renovation of the bathrooms, foyer and café. There is also a new air conditioning and fire and panic control system. This is another of the 22 deliveries of Cultura do Amanhã, the most robust and comprehensive program of the Municipal Department of Culture, which has been implementing renovation, modernization and requalification works in a third of its 60 cultural facilities. The total investment is R$ 75 million.

– The renovation of the Ipanema Theater, now the Rubens Corrêa Theater, is more than just a renovation. It is a tribute to Rio’s history and theatrical and cultural memory. This project, part of the Culture of Tomorrow program, reinforces the City Hall’s commitment to accessible, democratic art and to the preservation of our extensive network of cultural facilities – said Secretary Marcelo Calero.

The Ipanema Rubens Corrêa Theater is also undergoing a complete renovation of its entire stage infrastructure. In other words, a new sound, lighting and video system, new stage costumes and modernization of the lighting and scenery pole system, which will now be motorized. A state-of-the-art stage box, worthy of the theater scene that the people of Rio deserve.

A long and lasting friendship. Since the 1950s, Rubens Corrêa and Ivan de Albuquerque have been united by their devotion to theater. They were partners for almost 30 years in the Teatro Ipanema, built on a plot of land where Rubens Corrêa's mother's house once stood. That is why the new name was given to the theater, as was the name of the Ivan de Albuquerque and Leyla Ribeiro theater. Leyla was Ivan's wife.

Soon, the play season will begin with the musical “Leci Brandão – Na Palma da Mão”, with text by journalist and writer Leonardo Bruno.

The Ipanema Rubens Corrêa Theater is located at 824 Prudente de Morais Street, Ipanema.
