The Ipanema Theater will be renamed the Rubens Corrêa Theater - Samuel Barcelos/SMC

A love affair with art. This is how we can define the friendship that has united theater lovers Rubens Corrêa and Ivan de Albuquerque since the 50s. Partners for almost 30 years of the Teatro Ipanema, built on the land where Rubens Corrêa's mother's house once stood, the two will be honored by the Municipal Department of Culture (SMC), which will name the space as follows: Teatro Rubens Corrêa and Sala de Espetáculos Ivan de Albuquerque.

On Tuesday (12/12), the Secretary of Culture, Marcelo Calero, visited and presented the renovation, modernization and requalification works of the Ipanema Theater, which is scheduled to reopen with its new name next year. The renovation is part of the Culture of Tomorrow program package, announced in May, with resources in the order of approximately R$ 75 million, to renovate, modernize and requalify more than 20 cultural facilities in the city.

– The renovation of the Ipanema Theater, now the Rubens Corrêa Theater, is more than just a renovation. It is a tribute to Rio’s history and theatrical and cultural memory. This project, part of the Culture of Tomorrow program, reinforces the commitment of the City of Rio, through the Department of Culture, to accessible, democratic art and to the preservation of our extensive network of cultural facilities – stated Marcelo Calero.

The improvements include a redesign of the façade, the main entrance and accessibility for the public, artists and technical team, as well as new seats, including for people with disabilities, obese people and people with reduced mobility, and a review of the air conditioning system.

Ziembinski Theater also undergoes renovations

Founded by actor and director Walmor Chagas, the Ziembinski Theater in Tijuca has also undergone renovations and is expected to reopen in mid-2024. The renovations include not only the restoration, but also the revitalization of the surrounding area, requalifying its square. The idea is to even have an outdoor stage.

The main façade will also be completely revamped, with the installation of an exoskeleton and a slightly inclined ramp, in addition to the space receiving new flooring and new paint throughout the foyer to the audience and a new light and sound booth centralized with the stage.

Accessibility, modernization of electrical installations and fire control are priorities. The works total almost R$5 million.
