Heavy rains: Municipal Civil Defense works with 25 agents to respond to emergency incidents

The Subsecretariat of Civil Protection and Defense, linked to the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order, has been working since the early hours of this Monday, the 4th, with 25 agents to respond to emergency occurrences caused by heavy rain that hit the city early in the evening this Sunday, 3.

The agency received 98 calls, 24 of which were for landslides, slopes and/or embankments. Another 23 incidents were related to inspections of collapsed structures. Complaints are registered by calling 199.
The majority of the 98 occurrences come from neighborhoods in the North Zone of the city, among them: Olaria, Complex of Alemão, Ramos, Lins de Vasconcelos, Quintino Bocaiúva, Cascadura, São Cristóvão, Engenho da Rainha, Tomás Coelho, Engenho de Dentro and Cavalcanti.

Civil Defense activates 54 sirens

At 18:05 p.m. on Sunday, the agency activated the sirens in 54 of the 103 communities at high geological risk monitored by the Rio City Hall's sound alert system, as rainfall levels in these areas reached prudential levels. The sirens were turned off at 22 p.m.

How does the Civil Defense Community Alert and Alarm System work?

The Rio City Hall's Heavy Rain Community Alert and Warning System has 83 Civil Defense rain gauges, 165 sirens and 194 support points in 103 communities at high risk of landslides, as defined by Geo-Rio. The sirens are activated by the municipal Civil Defense after monitoring and evaluating critical rainfall levels by meteorologists from the Rio Alert System, based at the Rio Operations Center (COR), where professionals from the DCRJ work in an integrated manner, 24 hours a day. The system also involves the participation of community leaders and volunteers, in addition to previously defined support points for the preventive evacuation of residents.

SMS – The agency sends heavy rain alerts via SMS. Signing up for the service is voluntary. Registration is simple, quick and free: citizens must send their home zip code to 40199.
