Rio Civil Defense takes Building Citizenship project to Guaratiba school

Rio's Civil Defense resumed the Building Citizenship in Schools project at an event held on the morning of Friday (25/3) with around 200 9th grade students from the GEO Doutor Sócrates Municipal School in Guaratiba, in the city's West Zone. The action, a partnership with the Municipal Department of Education (SME), aimed to provide students with knowledge about risk perception and prevention measures, in addition to cultural and motivational activities through lectures and group exercises.

 

– Building Citizenship in Schools is another Civil Defense project aimed at children in Rio. They receive various guidelines on prevention and share this knowledge in their homes and neighborhoods, contributing to a safer and more resilient community – highlighted the Undersecretary of Protection and Civil Defense, Rodrigo Gonçalves da Silva.

 

Friday's event marked the resumption of the project that had been suspended due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and the restriction of in-person activities. The last one had been held in December 2019. The first lecture, given by engineer Orlando Sodré, aimed to show students knowledge about the responsibilities of Civil Defense and the importance of involving young people in the practice of citizenship actions, including environmental preservation and recycling of household waste, social behaviors that help prevent accidents and disasters.

Professor Luís Henrique Rosa then gave a motivational talk to the students and spoke about the topic of racism, providing a historical overview of the period of slavery in Brazil and the repercussions that are still felt in society today. With this, he sought to encourage the young people not to repeat behaviors that reproduce and reinforce racism. Still on the subject, the students organized an activity with a presentation of themes related to African heritage, such as capoeira, braids, music and dance that exalt the importance of this culture in the country.

The Building Citizenship in Schools project was created in 2003 with the aim of bringing educational and motivational activities into schools with themes such as disaster risk reduction, the environment and sustainability. The program has held more than 170 events over its 19 years of operation and has already reached approximately 30 students.
