Rio Civil Defense records 130 calls in three days of heavy rain in the city

Rio's Civil Defense registered 130 calls from the public between Thursday afternoon (06/01) and early Saturday evening (08/01). Most of the calls were from citizens seeking inspections of properties with cracks and leaks. In total, 22 calls were classified as emergencies, resulting in 16 closures in the city: Complexo do Alemão (five properties); Senador Camará (two), Bangu (two) and Catumbi (two); and São Cristóvão (one), Vila Isabel (one), Andaraí (one), Centro (one) and Vaz Lobo (one). No incidents with injuries were reported.

On Saturday afternoon (08/01), Civil Defense was called due to a landslide that hit two homes on Rua Valmir, in the area known as Morro dos Mineiros, in Complexo do Alemão, North Zone of Rio. After an inspection by engineers, five homes were closed off. There were no reports of injuries. Teams from the North Zone Subprefecture and the Department of Social Welfare also worked to assist residents of the affected homes.

Complexo do Alemão, which has the warning system's sirens, was the community with the highest amount of accumulated rain in three days in the city, with 145 millimeters in 96 hours. It was also the one with the highest volume in 24 hours, with 91,6 millimeters. Other communities that recorded a large volume of rain were: Sumaré (Rio Comprido), with 122,6 millimeters in 96 hours, and Morro da Cotia (Lins de Vasconcelos) with 110,8 millimeters in 96 hours.

Civil Defense teams continue to conduct inspections and respond to calls from the public. In case of emergencies, the agency can be contacted by calling 199.
