- Rio's GDP per capita is higher than that of nine G20 countries
The view of the city of Rio - Alexandre Macieira / Rio City Hall The GDP per capita of Rio de Janeiro in 2022 was R$48,8 thousand, according to estimates by the Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification (SMDEIS). With the average exchange rate at the time, the value was US$9,5 thousand. According to calculations by SMDEIS, in partnership with the Rio G20 Committee of the Rio City Hall, if the city of Rio were a member of the G20 – a group that brings together the largest and most important economies in the world –, it would occupy 12th place in GDP per capita, ahead of nine countries (Russia, China, Argentina, Mexico, Turkey, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and India).
– Rio is a vibrant city, with a strong business and tourism vocation. We are regaining investor confidence and the self-esteem of Rio residents, and the economy has been growing in recent years, which has already been reflected in the drop in the unemployment rate, for example. This position shows that it is essential that we continue working to ensure sustainable growth – assessed the Secretary of Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification, Chicão Bulhões.

In 2024, the city of Rio will host the G20 summit, a group made up of 19 countries and the European Union, which represent 80% of global GDP, 75% of world trade and 60% of the population.
– The city of Rio represents and brings together the challenges of development. The fact that Rio de Janeiro has a GDP per capita in the middle of the G20 list shows that the city still has a long way to go, but much has already been done. Hence the importance of an event like the G20 Summit, where development is discussed in a comparative context, thinking about international cooperation and investment for the city – says Lucas Padilha, president of the Rio G20 Committee, of the City of Rio.
