The city of Rio will gain a Beer Street. The Secretary of Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification, Chicão Bulhões, and the president of the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar), Gustavo Guerrante, launched this Wednesday (20/09), at the Palácio da Cidade, the “Reviver Rua da Carioca”, a program that will transform the traditional downtown street into a place full of beer factories and brewpubs (where it is produced, sold and consumed). The goal is to reopen stores and bring back to life a historic address in the capital.

The Rio City Hall, along the lines of the Reviver Cultural Center, will provide a subsidy to attract these entrepreneurs to the region – a call for proposals will be issued for property owners who want to rent their spaces and a call for proposals to select breweries interested in setting up shop in the area. The amount of funds will be R$1.000 per m² for renovations and R$75 per m² for monthly expenses, considering a ceiling for properties of up to 200 m². The monthly payments will last between 30 and 48 months.

– In this effort by the City Hall, the central point is the recovery of the City Center, because it has all the infrastructure and the capacity to grow. In addition to being the birthplace of the country, it is essential for the city’s economy. We are approving incentives and several urban changes so that we can see the Center revive and see its recovery – assessed the Secretary of Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification of Rio, Chicão Bulhões.

The project also allows for the preservation of historical heritage, since most of the properties on Rua da Carioca are listed by the Rio de Janeiro World Heritage Institute (IRPH) and the State Institute of Cultural Heritage (INEPAC). The street's history dates back to the 1697th century (1848), according to INEPAC. The current name dates back to 50, as the street was on the way to Chafariz da Carioca. With a thriving commerce, the local economy suffered more severely during the pandemic, with approximately XNUMX% of the stores on the street closing.

The secretaries of the Civil House, Eduardo Cavaliere; of Health, Daniel Soranz; of Government Coordination, Jorge Arraes; of Integrity, Transparency and Data Protection, Rodrigo Corrêa, and of Religious Diversity, Sergio Fernandes; the deputy mayors of the Center, Alberto Szafran, and of the South Zone, Flávio Valle, and the president of IRPH, Laura de Blasi, among other authorities, were also present at the launch of the program.

According to SMDEIS calculations, Rua da Cerveja is expected to generate R$222 million in revenue in 4 years and generate a total payroll (sum of salaries) of R$41,8 million in the same period. The expectation is that 500 new jobs will be created. Another relevant fact is that there are 120 registered breweries in the state of Rio, which produce almost 4 products and generate more than 5 jobs. Furthermore, with the Economic Freedom Law (LLE) and the Jato Permit, the city of Rio has become the only capital in Brazil that classifies beer production as low risk, for businesses up to 200m2.

Bruno Mansur, managing partner of the Hocus Pocus brewery, highlighted that after the approval of the LLE he saw smaller breweries emerge in Botafogo, Lapa and Barra, which he considered unthinkable when the brand's factory was opened, between 2017 and 2018, in Três Rios, despite the product having emerged in Humaitá.

– The proliferation of this type of business model is very positive for the sector and for the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is recognized as the birthplace of this beer revolution. We opened our bar in 2016 and saw the difference it makes to have a place where you can convey the complete experience to the consumer. This was fundamental to the trajectory of Hocus Pocus, for us to get to where we are today and continue growing – analyzed Mansur.

Reviver Rua da Carioca will also be another incentive to attract residents to the city center, according to CCPar president Gustavo Guerrante. The public company is working on revitalizing Porto Maravilha, next to the city's central neighborhood, where seven new residential buildings are being built and Porto Maravalley, a project in partnership with SMDEIS, is being built.

– On the border between Porto Maravilha and the city center, we have already had a major recent victory, which was the purchase and sale in a short period of time of the Edifício A Noite, which will be used for residential use at the beginning of next year. It is a set of activities, a series of initiatives by the City Hall, and this effort to show that the city center is a pleasant place to live, which will have a leisure area – reported Guerrante.

Stores registered in the project must be empty and have a facade or some contact with the street. Breweries must produce and sell their labels, offer activities and events that involve the public and operate at night and on weekends. Registrations for properties and projects can be made at the CCPar headquarters, located at Rua Sacadura Cabral 133, Saúde, within 30 calendar days after the publication of the notice, which will be available HERE, starting this Thursday (21/09).
