Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes participated in the opening of the Rio Construction Summit on Tuesday (19/9), the largest construction industry event ever held in Brazil, which will run until September 21 at Píer Mauá. The Rio Construction Summit will host debates on relevant and current topics for the construction industry and is sponsored by Invest.Rio, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall's investment promotion and attraction agency.

– It is a great joy to be here, seeing this sector that is so important to our economy coming together in Rio to discuss Brazil. If it is up to the Rio City Hall, we will make the legislation more flexible, make your lives easier, change construction parameters, and dare to make major infrastructure interventions. We will do things like this: there is a landfill beneath us and we have a 9 km tunnel. It was an abandoned place and it has become a point of reference. And this is only possible with a strong and thriving construction sector – stated Mayor Eduardo Paes.

For three days, the world's greatest leaders and agents in the construction industry will meet to discuss the current situation and the prospects for increasing productivity in the sector, reducing the housing deficit and improving infrastructure in Brazil. Job creation, key trends and the recovery of the sector are among the topics covered at the meeting.

– This is a major event that will bring to Rio de Janeiro the spotlight on discussions about the construction industry and the real estate market. We will talk about innovation, legislation, new construction methods, debates and presentations of successful national and international examples, presented by renowned speakers who will bring a wealth of content – said the president of the Civil Construction Industry Union of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Sinduscon-Rio), Claudio Hermolin.

The municipal secretary of Economic Development, Simplification and Innovation, Chicão Bulhões, will participate in a panel on cutting red tape. He highlights programs such as LICIN (Integrated Licensing for Construction or Modification of Buildings) and Reviver Centro, which have sped up licensing processes and are revitalizing the city's central region:

– There is no economic development in any city in the world without a strong and competitive construction industry. It is the construction industry that builds buildings, houses, and all types of urban interventions that directly affect people’s lives. So, having these discussions happening in Rio de Janeiro about Brazil is essential. And from an economic perspective, the sector is one of the largest employers. We are seeing growth in the city of Rio with the launch of LICIN and we are managing to issue licenses very quickly, currently one of the fastest in Brazil.

The president of Invest.Rio, Alexandre Vermeulen, recalled that the city is reinventing itself, and the construction industry is one of the main forces in this process:

– It’s great to have an event of this size in the city of Rio. We are bringing back this type of investment. We have several opportunities in Rio, we have public-private partnerships, infrastructure, construction in Porto Maravilha, Reviver Centro. In short, it’s a huge opportunity for investment funds, builders and developers who are here. Invest.Rio is ready to welcome everyone to our room at the event.

In total, there will be more than 200 speakers, divided into four simultaneous stages. There will be more than 80 hours of content. The event is expected to bring together an audience of more than five thousand people, including businesspeople, engineering and architecture professionals, government officials and students.
