Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes participated in a roundtable discussion on Wednesday (20/9) with the mayors of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, and Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman, about sustainable and inclusive cities at the Rio Construction Summit, the largest construction industry event ever held in Brazil. The panel, held at Arena Firjan, in Armazém 3 at Pier Mauá, aimed to share experiences, best practices and challenges.

Check out the main points highlighted by the mayor:

Sustainable city

“These changes will only happen through local governments. We, the municipalities, have the enormous capacity to generate an impact on people’s lives. The challenge is how do we finance and pay this bill? How do we get resources to make these important infrastructure interventions? In solid waste, for example. The cost that each of us here (mayors) has for the final disposal of our solid waste is very high.”

Climate changes

“There are measures that can mitigate and reduce the impacts of heavy rains. A concrete example is the large reservoirs in Praça da Bandeira. Before, any rain would flood that area. We went there, carried out an infrastructure intervention and, depending on the volume of rain, we can handle it.”

Gender and racial equality

“We created the first Women’s Secretariat and also a Youth Secretariat. The city of Rio also leads an anti-racist network, seeking to address these issues in a very open manner through affirmative public policies and concrete actions. These are issues that are permanently part of our city’s agenda.”

UN Goals

“This is a challenge for the world. The truth is that we are all very far behind in relation to the goals set by the UN for 2030. I participated in a debate this week in New York, how can we solve this? We have a global financing problem. The challenge is huge, the flow of resources needs to return, the country needs to grow and move forward. This fair shows this, we are looking ahead with optimism, credit is returning and the economy is growing again.”

The Rio Construction Summit ends this Thursday (21/9). In total, there will be more than 200 speakers, divided into four simultaneous stages. There will be more than 80 hours of content. The event is expected to bring together an audience of more than five thousand people, including businesspeople, engineering and architecture professionals, government officials and students. The event is sponsored by Invest.Rio, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall's investment promotion and attraction agency.
