The economy of Rio de Janeiro is booming. In 2025, economic activity grew by 2,6% compared to 2024, after adjusting for inflation. These calculations come from the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development (SMDE). With this rate, the Rio Economic Activity Indicator (IAE-Rio) showed a performance superior to that of Brazil's GDP, which grew by 2,3%, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

– Rio's economic activity continues to grow steadily, slightly above the performance of the Brazilian economy. This shows us that we must continue working on good projects to attract even more investments, which will translate into more opportunities and income for Rio residents – assessed the municipal secretary of Economic Development, Osmar Lima.

SMDE developed the IAE-Rio to monitor the city's economic performance monthly. The index is a combination of tax collection data – both ISS (Service Tax) and the amount of ICMS (Value Added Tax) collected in the city – with other IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) figures.

The IAE-Rio report is published monthly in the Rio Economic Bulletin. The full report is available at [link to report]. Rio Economic Observatory.
