The city of Rio de Janeiro has created 342,3 thousand new formal jobs in the last four years. Of this total, 65,9% were in the services sector; 16,4% in the construction sector; 11,4% in commerce; and 6,3% in industry. In 2024, in the accumulated period up to November, 84,7 thousand new formal jobs were created. This represents a growth of 17,5%, compared to the previous year and above Brazil (growth of 16,7%).

– In 2024, the city showed that it can stand out in generating opportunities and, consequently, in generating income and improving quality of life. We will work to increase these numbers in the coming years – pointed out the municipal secretary of Economic Development, Osmar Lima.

This number represents almost half, or 49,4% of the total, of all formal jobs in the state of Rio, with 693,2 thousand vacancies. Furthermore, Rio was the second capital that created the most formal jobs in Brazil, behind only São Paulo.

The survey was carried out by Rio City Hall, calculated by the Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development (SMDE), based on figures from CAGED, the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE).

These Rio labor market data are analyzed monthly in the Rio Economic Bulletin, available at Rio Economic Observatory.
