Between January 2021 and October 2025, 378,9 new formal jobs were created in Rio de Janeiro. (Archive/Rio de Janeiro City Hall) The economy of Rio de Janeiro remained strong throughout 2025. Data released by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, calculated by the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development (SMDE), shows that the city's economic activity experienced real growth of 2,9% in the 12 months ending in October 2025. The Rio Economic Activity Indicator (IAE-Rio) was developed by SMDE, with the objective of monitoring the monthly behavior of Rio's economic activity.
"Rio has many reasons to celebrate. The economic figures show a thriving city and sustained growth," explains Osmar Lima, the city's Secretary of Economic Development.
The inflation rate in Rio de Janeiro over the last 12 months ending in November 2025 was 3,5%, one percentage point (pp) below the Brazilian inflation rate (4,5%), according to data from the National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), released by IBGE. The composition of price variations in Rio was as follows: 4,2% in administered prices, 1,1 pp below the Brazilian figure (5,3%); 5,1% in service prices, 0,9 pp below the Brazilian figure (6,0%); 1,8% in industrial goods, 0,8 pp below the Brazilian figure (2,6%); and 0,2% growth in food prices, 2,3 pp below the Brazilian figure (2,5%).
Regarding the job market, between January 2021 and October 2025, 378,9 new formal jobs were created in Rio, according to data from CAGED / Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), with 72,8% in the service sector, 10,8% in commerce, 10,5% in construction, and 5,9% in industry.
Regarding the unemployment rate in Rio, according to data from the IBGE's Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua), there was a decrease of 0,6 percentage points (pp) between the third quarter of 2025 and the same period of 2024, bringing the rate between July and September 2025 to 7,0%.
With the improvement in the economy in recent years, in the third quarter of 2025, there were 401,2 people in the most vulnerable situation in the labor market – the sum of unemployed, underemployed, discouraged and unavailable people – in Rio, a reduction of almost 300 (280,1) compared to the third quarter of 2021.
And finally, in the third quarter of 2025, Rio had 3,3 million people employed (formally and informally).
