In 2025, the city of Rio de Janeiro received 12,5 million domestic and international tourists. This record number of visitors had a direct impact on the city's revenue. According to the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, last year the city collected R$ 315,2 million (December 2025 prices, adjusted for inflation using the IPCA-RJ index) in taxes from the tourism sector, which includes services related to accommodation, travel, and similar activities. The total collected from the ISS (Service Tax) was 14,3% higher than the previous year, reaching R$ 275,8 million.

– The growth from 2025 compared to the previous year is significant. If we look at 2019, the increase is even more impressive. This is because the Rio de Janeiro City Hall has created many initiatives in recent years – consolidation of Galeão Airport and a strong events calendar – which are resulting in these positive numbers – explained the Secretary of Economic Development, Osmar Lima.

Compared to 2019, the real growth in revenue was 83,6%. In that year, the amount recorded was R$ 171,7 million.

The survey was based on data from the Municipal Finance Department (SMF) and compiled by the Municipal Departments of Economic Development (SMDE) and Tourism (SMTUR-RIO), as well as Riotur.

– This result reflects the continuous work of promoting Rio in key markets and strengthening the "Rio All Year Round" calendar, which keeps the city active and attractive in all seasons. More visitors mean more jobs, income, and direct returns for the municipality – stated the president of Riotur, Bernardo Fellows.

– This proves that we are on the right track, developing consistent work, projecting Rio de Janeiro nationally and internationally as a powerful city that hosts major events with excellence, such as Carnival, New Year's Eve, Todo Mundo no Rio, Rock in Rio, Web Summit, G20, Olympics, World Cup, among others. Rio is now seen as a desirable destination both for those who have never visited us and for those who return to experience once again the Carioca way of life, with freedom, nature, sports, cultural and gastronomic life, sun and sea – said the Secretary of Tourism, Daniela Maia.
