City of Rio returns to daily RIOgaleão flights to Rome

The city of Rio has a new flight route to Rome. ITA Airways began operating again this Monday (30/10), at RIOgaleão. The flight to Rome will have daily frequency from Tom Jobim International Airport to Rome – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Fiumicino). By February 2024, the end of the next high season, the expectation is that 49 thousand passengers will travel on the new route.

– We have made every effort. I believe that the confidence of companies that choose Galeão and fly directly to Rio de Janeiro has shown that this recovery and that this effort are working. We believe that in the next two weeks there will be a definitive decision on the coordination of airports at the TCU. We have been working with the technical area to ensure this, so that perhaps ITA will increase its flights here to the city of Rio de Janeiro even more, bringing more opportunities to all the people who want to visit us – stated the municipal secretary of Urban and Economic Development, Chicão Bulhões.

Italian Ambassador Alessandro Cortese commented on the initiative:

– Over the past year and a half, Brazil has become, along with the United States, the first country in absolute terms in terms of increased passenger transport capacity, thanks to the increase in daily flight frequencies. This was possible through continuous investments in innovation, sustainability and digitalization of services and the consequent and growing satisfaction on the part of Brazilian consumers.

In the first month, November 2023, the route to Rome is expected to handle 11,5 passengers. The peak is expected to be in December, with 24 travelers. And in January 2024, another 13 people.

– This new route reinforces our growth focus in South America. Transatlantic international routes are very important to us, to the point that they account for 45% of our total production. We are a very young company, only two years old, but we have grown very quickly. Up to September, 11 million passengers were transported. This represents a growth of 54% compared to the previous year – emphasized the CCO of ITA Airways, Emiliana Limosani.

President of RIOgaleão, Alexandre Monteiro said that this Monday was an important day for the city:

– Today is a very important day for us. We are reconnecting Rio de Janeiro with Rome, cities known worldwide for their natural beauty and history. With this new daily route, we bring more tourists, more jobs and new businesses to the city of Rio.

New international routes from RIOgaleão in 2023

Airlines are expanding their routes from RIOgaleão. JetSMART launched a flight to Montevideo in 2023, increased its route to Santiago with a daily flight and will increase its flights to Buenos Aires from six to ten weekly departures in December 2023. Latam resumed operations to Buenos Aires in July, in addition to increasing the number of flights to Santiago, reaching 17 weekly.

Iberia has just increased its weekly flights between Rio and Madrid from three to four. By the beginning of June 2024, this will increase to six. British Airways began operating daily in October, with a new premium product and adding daily flights to Buenos Aires via RIOgaleão. TAP has also expanded its network to Lisbon, from ten to eleven weekly flights, and will operate up to two daily flights on the route between 23 and 31 December.

From December of this year to February 2024, Delta will operate a seasonal route to New York with daily frequency. American Airlines will fly from October to March 2024, also to New York, with three weekly departures, and between December 21 and January 12, it will have daily flights. Delta will also resume its flight to Atlanta, which will operate throughout 06, with daily flights from December to March and three weekly departures during the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere, which begins at the end of the first quarter. Paranair will also begin its seasonal operation in December with three weekly flights to the city of Asunción, in Paraguay, from December 01 of this year to February 2024, 26.
