Rio estimates a movement of R$3,2 billion in the economy on New Year's Eve 2025

New Year's Eve 2025 is expected to generate R$3,2 billion in the city of Rio, with five million people participating in events spread throughout the city. In Copacabana alone, it is estimated that 2,5 million people – including locals and tourists – will celebrate the New Year.

These figures are from the second edition of the study New Year's Eve in Data, by the City of Rio, a publication made by the Municipal Secretariat for Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE), the João Goulart Foundation Institute (FJG) and Riotur (Rio de Janeiro Municipal Tourism Company). The document also reveals a series of data that show the magnitude of the second largest event in the city, behind only Carnival.

– New Year’s Eve is essential to boost the city’s economy, which will enter 2025 with bars, restaurants and hotels packed with national and foreign tourists. With the economy booming, Rio residents have more opportunities and better income. We had a special 2024, with great shows and events, and we will start a new year with great promise as well – assessed the acting municipal secretary of Urban and Economic Development, Thiago Dias.

Réveillon em Dados estimates that 50 jobs are directly or indirectly linked to the New Year's Eve celebrations. This year, the new addition is the debut of the Parque Oeste (Inhoaíba) and Parque Realengo Stages – public spaces inaugurated this year by the Municipality – in addition to the return of the Leme Stage.

On the main stage, on Copacabana Beach, the attractions include Caetano Veloso & Maria Bethânia, Ivete Sangalo and Anitta, to further fill the areas of the most famous beach in the world.

– We hope to surpass the impressive five million participants of 2024 throughout the city, and further increase the R$42 million collected in ISS from the tourism and events sector, which represented a growth of 66,3% compared to 2022 and more than double the pre-pandemic numbers in 2019. Our goal is to continue promoting the party that will generate more than R$3 billion in the Rio de Janeiro economy – highlighted the president of Riotur, Patrick Corrêa.

Some figures from the publication showed that, in surveys previously conducted, tourist satisfaction with Rio is quite high. A total of 83% of people who responded to the questionnaire gave the city a score of 8 or higher. For 84% of people, the feeling of safety is positive (excellent or good); and the evaluation is positive about the shows (90%) and fireworks displays (83%).

Still on the subject of tourists, Argentina is the country with the most foreign tourists, followed by Chile and the USA. Regarding domestic tourists, São Paulo and Minas Gerais are the two main states.

The City Hall's operations include 11 departments directly involved with New Year's Eve, with 8,4 employees working on city events, approximately 60% of whom are from COMLURB. In addition, there are more than seven thousand vehicles and equipment from the City Hall dedicated to New Year's Eve.

– The work of the João Goulart Foundation Institute, in collaboration with the departments, reinforces the importance of highlighting how the City Hall organizes and evaluates the city's major events, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency in the application of public resources – stated the president of the FJG Institute, Rafaela Bastos.
