The city government celebrates Black November with cultural and educational activities.

The city of Rio will host various activities and events this November dedicated to celebrating Afro-Brazilian culture and reflecting on the struggles and achievements of Black people. Since 2023, with a decree signed by Mayor Eduardo Paes creating "Black November Rio," the date has been included in the city's official calendar and definitively marks reflections on the subject. The celebrations include lectures, workshops, exhibitions, entrepreneurship fairs, samba circles, awareness-raising events against racism, among other initiatives. One of the achievements of racial equality policies in the municipality will be realized on Monday (November 17th) with the city of Rio's adherence to the Federal Government's "Black Youth Alive Plan," which outlines a proposal for concrete actions to ensure full access to education, health, culture, work, and income for Black youth in vulnerable situations.

– The agenda for this November 20th reflects our look to the past, revering our ancestry, and to the future we are building together with every citizen of Rio. The Library of Knowledge, a fundamental landmark of the new Praça XI, part of Little Africa which will undergo a major urban transformation, dialogues with the procession of Tia Ciata that honors our peoples and our manifestations, passes by the Statue of Zumbi which is the greatest symbol of our struggle and arrives at the celebration of our way of life with the feijoada and the samba circle of Renascença, a traditional black club in Rio – commented the Secretary of Human Rights and Racial Equality, Edson Santos.

Throughout the month, the public can enjoy a series of cultural, artistic, and educational activities that celebrate African culture. On the 19th, the Multicultural Fair and the Fair of the Municipal Council for the Defense of the Rights of Black People of the city of Rio de Janeiro (COMDEDINE) will be held at the São Sebastião Administrative Center (CASS), in addition to the first activities at the Zumbi dos Palmares Monument on Avenida Presidente Vargas. On the 20th, Black Consciousness Day, the 11th edition of the Tia Ciata Parade will take place in the city center, the Samba do Terreiro de Crioulo at Praça das Juras in Bangu, and the Tribute to Zumbi dos Palmares in Padre Miguel.

Among the activities aimed at reflecting on the struggles and achievements of Black people, the Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture (MUHCAB) stands out on the 28th, hosting the Meeting of the Anti-Racist Cities Pact, with representatives from the signatory cities. In addition, there will be workshops, exhibitions, lectures, debates, and podcasts, in an agenda dedicated to valuing Afro-Brazilian culture and reflecting on the struggles and achievements of Black people. Located in the historic Little Africa region of Rio de Janeiro, MUHCAB reinforces its role as a space of living memory, knowledge, and affirmation of Black identity.

The Rio de Janeiro Municipal Guard (GM-Rio) will hold the 6th edition of the Solemn Week of Black Consciousness from November 20th to 28th, with a series of cultural, artistic, and educational activities that value African culture and reinforce the institution's commitment to combating inequalities that affect the daily operations of municipal guards. Meanwhile, the Secretariat of Science and Technology will promote workshops on Combating Racism in Practice on the Internet and Anti-Racist Communication and Advertising in some Knowledge Centers. In addition to the workshops, the secretariat is promoting a Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQIAPN+ film festival with screenings of films on racial themes followed by debates.

Throughout the month, the Municipal Department of Education is promoting a broad agenda dedicated to Black November, mobilizing schools from all regional coordinating bodies in activities that value the culture, history, and contributions of African ancestry in Brazil. The activities include artistic works, storytelling, fairs with workshops, exhibitions, dance, and musical performances. Among the highlights, schools from the 2nd Regional Education Coordination (CRE) developed the "Brincadeiras em Cria" (Playtime in Creation) project, with ancestral games and experiences created by the students themselves, while another regional office is working on the theme "How Much Africa is in Someone's Mathematics?", through a games and play workshop. The program also includes a partnership with the Rio Art Museum for the 13th Conference on Education for Ethnic-Racial Relations, on November 29th and 30th, reinforcing the network's commitment to an anti-racist and pluralistic education.

In the facilities of the Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance (SMAS), Black November has been addressed since the beginning of the month with various activities, including lectures, discussion groups, video screenings, and storytelling. The city's 47 CRAS (Reference Centers for Social Assistance) are promoting activities focused on this issue. At the Yara Amaral CRAS in Guadalupe, in the North Zone, vulnerable individuals served by the Social Coexistence and Strengthening of Bonds (SCFV) and Comprehensive Family Protection and Care (PAIF) services will discuss anti-racist practices on the 17th, 18th, and 19th, moderated by a psychologist. At the Maria Clara Machado CRAS in Santa Cruz, the theme "Being anti-racist is everyone's commitment" will be discussed on the 27th, exploring how social assistance spaces can contribute to this fight. At the Cecília Meireles CRAS (Social Assistance Reference Center) in Campo Grande, also in the West Zone, the staff innovated: from the 7th to the 19th, a tree is being assembled with dry branches, on a base of clay and sand, with leaves and fruits in the form of messages supporting Black consciousness, enriched by handicrafts that refer to the cause. Everything is made by participants of the community service groups.

Programming at MUHCAB

SATURDAYS (22 and 29/11)

Ananse: training for educators in Black culture and art.

The Ananse Training Course: Training for Educators in Black Culture and Art is an initiative of the Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture/MUHCAB and aims to present and encourage the (re)cognition of Afro-Brazilian and African culture and art as pedagogical tools both in schools and in different educational contexts. Emphasizing Black protagonism, the objective of the training is to share with educators theoretical reflections, creative methodologies, and practices that can contribute to expanding their cultural and didactic repertoire in favor of an education based on anti-racism. There will be five meetings that will take place on Saturdays throughout November, from 9 am to 12 pm, taught by specialists from different areas, composing a mosaic of transdisciplinary knowledge.

Praises and Poems in the Song of the Tincoãs (Pró-Carioca Languages ​​Grant)

This musical research project aims to explore the work of the group "Os Tincoãs" in terms of the fusion of Christian sacred song with African-inspired rhythms, studying the aspects of their environment in the 60s in Cachoeira, Bahia. As a result, a lecture with audiovisual presentations and musical interludes by the project's creator, Alan de Deus, will be shown to the public in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to the production of a booklet with images and accounts of this experience.

Pra Gira Girar is a musical performance in tribute and celebration of the work of Os Tincoãs, revering Afro-Brazilian ancestry and spirituality through harmonies, rhythms, and songs that reclaim the strength of tradition. The project is led by artists with significant experience in the field of popular culture. Renata Ribeiro, a jongueira (a traditional Brazilian folk dancer), samba dancer, poet, and cultural producer, is a project manager at MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio (Rio Art Museum), curator of Universidade das Quebradas (University of the Slums), vice-president and co-founder of the Movimento das Mulheres Sambistas (Movement of Women Samba Dancers), and producer of Casa da Mulher Sambista (House of the Women Samba Dancer), and the projects Mães de Wakanda (Mothers of Wakanda), Awurè, and Ipadè.

The meeting “Cohousing: Aging in Community” proposes a conversation about building a collaborative housing model aimed at Black and LGBTQIAPN+ people in old age. The activity brings together researchers, architects, activists, and members of social movements to reflect on ways of living that prioritize care, autonomy, and coexistence. More than just thinking about a physical space, the event discusses ways to build networks of affection, sustainability, and belonging, affirming the right to age with dignity and freedom.

23 and 30 – Educational Activities – EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The educational and cultural program of MUHCAB aims to promote emancipatory and inclusive educational practices, focusing on the history of affirmation and resistance of the Afro-Brazilian people. The objective is to contribute to transforming the understanding of what it means to be a Black person in Brazil, making MUHCAB a creative and democratic space for building a post-colonial future. The activities proposed for Sundays in November will alternate between:

Guided Visits: The goal of this type of visit is to foster exchange between the visitor and the museum, its exhibitions, works, and themes relevant to ethnic-racial relations in Brazil and the African diaspora.

Storytelling: Presentation of different stories based on the oral tradition of the griots and Black children's and young adult literature.

Afro Dance Workshop - Women's Connection - 2nd Edition

The Conexão Mulher 2ª Edição project promotes Afro-referenced dance workshops aimed primarily at women, focusing on valuing ancestry, body expression, and strengthening self-esteem. Over four months (August to November), 16 workshops will be offered weekly, seeking to create a space for learning, exchange, and collective experience. With activities designed to strengthen female identity and empowerment, the project establishes itself as a territory for creation, belonging, and celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture.

Feijoada Project - Nando's House

The project “Feijoada do Quilombo Urbano – A Casa do Nando” brings a tradition of flavor, culture, and resistance to MUHCAB, with feijoada meals held every Friday at a special price for the residents of Pequena África. Recognized as one of the 10 best feijoada restaurants in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the initiative values ​​Afro-Brazilian cuisine as an expression of identity and community life. With the support of the master of popular gastronomy, Nando, the project strengthens the territory and transforms the museum into an affective and cultural meeting point, where food, music, and memory unite in celebration of Rio de Janeiro's Black heritage.

SATURDAY, 11/29 – EDUCATIONAL VISITS IN FRENCH

Through a partnership with the MUHCAB Educational Program, Franco-Congolese researcher Suzanne Veyrier will offer educational visits in French, aiming to disseminate the narratives present in the museum to people from French-speaking African countries and other interested individuals. This will highlight the Afro-diasporic connection that unites Black people across multiple territories.

Mojuba Exu Program (Podcast)

The Mojubá Exu Program is a podcast dedicated to reflecting on communication, art, and ancestry from the crossroads opened by Exu. In each episode, diverse voices share knowledge, experiences, and narratives that traverse religiosity, popular culture, African philosophy, and contemporary life. The program proposes a space for listening and movement, where word, sound, and memory intersect to consider other ways of existing, creating, and communicating in the world.

Seminar “Valuing Black Culture in Sports” (Flamengo Rowing Club)

The Flamengo Seminar proposes a space for dialogue and reflection on confronting racism in sports, bringing together athletes, clubs, experts, and organizations engaged in promoting racial equality. The event will feature three panels: the first, with those leading anti-racism training at CRF, will share experiences, lessons learned, and challenges observed; the second, with athletes such as Gui Deodato, Olivinha, Danilo, Vangelys Reinke, Rafa Silva, and Rebeca Andrade, will address trajectories and experiences in the face of racial barriers; and the third, with representatives from clubs (Flamengo, Botafogo, Vasco, and Fluminense), will discuss institutional initiatives to combat racism.

Meeting of Black Entrepreneurs (AAJOB)

The Black Entrepreneurs Meeting – AAJOB (Associação Amigos do José Bonifácio) is a space dedicated to valuing and strengthening businesses led by Black people. The event promotes the exchange of experiences, collective learning, and networking, bringing together entrepreneurs, experts, and organizations working to promote the Black economy and racial equity. Through lectures, panels, and roundtables, the meeting shares management, innovation, and sustainability strategies, strengthening support networks and fostering the economic protagonism of the Black population.

Dida's Samba

On November 20th, MUHCAB hosts Samba da Dida, its traditional samba circle, celebrating the richness and joy of Afro-Brazilian music. The event brings together musicians, percussionists, and samba lovers for an afternoon of singing, dancing, and community connection. With a repertoire that blends classics and original compositions, the circle provides an immersion in the tradition of Rio de Janeiro samba, strengthening cultural memory and the bonds between artists and the public. On November 22nd, MUHCAB hosts Samba da Moenda Velha, a samba circle celebrating the tradition and joy of Afro-Brazilian culture. The circle provides an immersion into the memory of samba, strengthening cultural identity and community ties. Workshops on Ancestral Rhythms

On November 23rd, MUHCAB will host the Ancestral Rhythms Workshops, educational activities that celebrate the musicality and knowledge of African-based cultures. Open to all audiences, the workshops explore traditional instruments, songs, and dances, offering a practical immersion in the richness of Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Guided by specialized masters and educators, participants will experience ancestral techniques, stories, and meanings, strengthening cultural memory and connection to ancestry. The Ancestral Rhythms Workshops are an opportunity for learning, exchange, and celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage in a vibrant and participatory way.

Samba of the Old Rogues

On November 23rd, MUHCAB hosts Samba dos Velhos Malandros, a samba circle celebrating the tradition, memory, and joy of Afro-Brazilian culture. The event brings together experienced musicians and percussionists to guide the audience through samba classics and original compositions, in an afternoon of singing, dancing, and camaraderie. More than just a musical performance, Samba dos Velhos Malandros is a space for community gathering, cultural resistance, and appreciation of Black heritage, strengthening the ties between history, music, and identity.

Celebration of the recognition of the craft of the Baianas do Acarajé as cultural heritage (SMC support)

National Acarajé Vendors' Day celebrates the tradition, culture, and history of the women who sell acarajé in Bahia, guardians of one of the most important symbols of Afro-Brazilian cuisine and culture. The date values ​​their work, ancestry, and legacy, promoting cultural activities, discussions, and events that reinforce the identity, resistance, and leadership of Black women in preserving the knowledge and flavors of Bahia.

Seminar on Housing and Black Culture in the City Center

The seminar “Port Region, Right to Housing and the Racial Question” proposes a space for reflection and debate on the impacts of urban transformations in the port area of ​​Rio de Janeiro. From a historical and racial perspective, the meeting brings together researchers, community leaders, and public administrators to discuss the disputes surrounding housing, the right to the city, and the permanence of Black populations in the region. Samba Terreiro de Crioulo celebrates the Afro-Brazilian roots of samba, reconnecting the audience to its community, religious, and cultural origins.
