Rio de Janeiro City Hall has lit up some of the city's main monuments in red to mark World AIDS Day. The color is a reference to the red ribbon that symbolizes solidarity among people around the world. The lighting is supported by Rioluz.

The Rocinha Walkway and the Lapa Arches will remain illuminated until the 12th of this month. The Rio Art Museum (MAR), the City Council and Christ the Redeemer were illuminated last Sunday, World AIDS Day.

The date highlights the importance of information, scientific research and HIV prevention, in addition to confronting the prejudice and taboo that still exist around the disease.

– The lighting of monuments in several capitals around the world is a symbol of solidarity with all people living with HIV and also a tribute to those who have passed away. Our actions aim to show solidarity with people living with HIV and raise awareness about the importance of testing. It is possible to get treatment, but it is necessary to start with testing. Those who test have the opportunity to get treatment. Our goal is to raise awareness about the risks of the disease and the importance of its prevention – says Carlos Tufvesson, coordinator of Sexual Diversity.

The action is part of a set of actions developed this month by the Sexual Diversity Coordination (CDS-Rio), an agency linked to the Civil House, and by the Municipal Health Department (SMS) to celebrate the date.
