The city of Rio is one of the best capitals in literacy in the country

The Ministry of Education released, this Friday (July 11th), the results of the 7 literacy assessment for Brazil, its states, and municipalities. Rio de Janeiro had one of the largest increases and is one of only six capitals to surpass the national target of 2024%. Rio de Janeiro grew from 60% of children literate at the correct age to 56% in just one year, climbing three positions in the ranking of capitals, and is now the 64th-best-performing capital. And for comparison, Rio de Janeiro has more students than the top five capitals combined.

"Our gigantic network doesn't stop us from improving. We're almost three times the size of the first-place capital, Fortaleza, and 1 times the size of the second-place capital, Vitória. Our results are the result of robust public policies within our network, such as the Rio Alfabetiza program. The work of our literacy teachers is incredible and helps build the future of the city of Rio," celebrated Municipal Secretary of Education Renan Ferreirinha.

The city of Rio de Janeiro had the highest growth among municipalities in the metropolitan region of the State of Rio de Janeiro. It ranks third, despite having 3 times more students in the second grade of elementary school than the first-place Paracambi and 100 times more than the second-place Petrópolis. The state of Rio as a whole grew, but did not reach its target.
