The 2021 school year for Rio's municipal education system will begin on February 8, with in-person or virtual classes, and end on December 17. The dates were set by the municipal secretary of education, Renan Ferreirinha, and published this Wednesday, January 6, in the city's Official Gazette. The 1 school year for Rio's Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education will have 2021 days, two more than the minimum required.

– Right now, we are focused on the enrollment process and planning “how” classes will resume. To this end, we are structuring the health protocol together with the Health Department, the integrated case monitoring system and a contingency plan to ensure the safety of in-person classes. We will soon consult the Special Committee to Combat Covid-19, in addition to continuing to listen to the school community, to define the date for in-person classes to return. The fact is that our school year begins on February 8th – says Ferreirinha.

For the secretary, it is essential to start the school year next month so that all the programmed content can be applied properly. The 2021 school year calendar, published this Wednesday (06/01) in the Official Gazette of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, defines that the mid-year recess will be between July 12 and 23, the same period adopted by the state education network.

– We are working hard to do the best for our students. We had a very difficult 2020 and, due to the pandemic, we have great challenges ahead: welcoming our students and professionals, reestablishing ties between the school and the school community and delivering quality public education for everyone – says Ferreirinha.
