Rio is the first capital to resume mandatory in-person teaching in the country - Archive/City of Rio

Starting this Tuesday (22/06), 20 more municipal schools will resume in-person teaching. The Municipal Department of Education reports that these schools have received the necessary adaptations to comply with health protocols to combat Covid-19. With this measure, which meets the expectations of parents and guardians, there will now be 1.502 municipal schools and more than eight thousand students with classes taught directly by teachers, which will benefit students across the entire network, from nursery to Youth and Adult Education (EJA), including special classes.

In this new stage of the resumption, 97% of the municipal education network will be operating with in-person activities. It is worth remembering that in-person teaching is optional, and the decision to attend is up to students, parents and guardians. Those who prefer can continue studying remotely in its various possibilities.

To ensure the best working conditions for the entire school community, the Municipal Education Network follows a strict health protocol. Schools are considered fit to return to in-person classes if they meet the requirements of the checklist on supplies and facilities, which establishes various points such as the installation of 70% alcohol gel dispensers in the building or employees applying 70% alcohol to students' hands, as well as adapted drinking fountains with taps for filling cups and bottles. Recently, municipal schools received R$18,1 million in funding to make adjustments and minor repairs.

At the beginning of the year, the SME received and distributed 800 disposable masks. In addition, 336 PFF2 masks were purchased in May. Each education professional, from lunch ladies to teachers, received six masks of this model, which is considered by experts to be one of the most efficient in personal protection.

Return is optional

Students who choose not to go to school will continue to study remotely. Since the beginning of the school year, on February 8, students in the municipal school system have been able to watch video classes prepared and presented by teachers from the municipal school system. Rioeduca na TV is broadcast on the open TV Escola signal (channel 2.3) and also on closed TV: NET/Claro (channel 15), Claro TV (channel 8), Oi TV (channel 25), Sky (channel 21) and Vivo (channel 7). Rioeduca na TV video classes are also available on MultiRio's YouTube channel. In addition, on the MultiRio Portal, a special area gathers information about Rioeduca on TV, such as programming and related content.

Internet data for students

The SME also provides the Rioeduca at Home app, which can be downloaded onto the smartphones of students and guardians, available for iOS and Android. Access is free, because the City Hall is paying for the students' internet data. Students who do not have equipment to access the internet or live in areas without coverage receive additional printed teaching materials and often go to schools to drop off their teaching activities. In case of doubt, they will be clarified the next time the student goes to school.
