On the morning of Wednesday (24/2), the municipal secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha, accompanied the resumption of in-person classes in the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Education Network. He received elementary school students from the Swiss Municipal School, in the Penha Circular neighborhood, in the North Zone of Rio. In this first phase, students from preschool, 1st and 2nd grades of elementary school, from 38 units, which brings together around 7 thousand students, will return. The return is optional for families and will be progressive.

– At this school, 78% of the guardians expressed interest in returning to in-person classes. We have been working a lot remotely with virtual classes and now with the Rioeduca em Casa app, which we launched yesterday. Returning to in-person teaching is essential and we will do it in the best way possible with safety for our students and professionals – said Ferreirinha.

The first student to arrive at EM Suíça was little Emily, 7 years old, who was accompanied by her mother Cleide Mota Campos, 42 years old. The two were greeted at the gate by the secretary and the director of the unit, Fernanda Claudio Moreira.

– I was anxious to return. I don’t think any mother was taught how to teach. And Emily missed school – said Cleide.

According to Secretary Ferreirinha, the decision to begin resuming in-person classes with students from Preschool, 1st and 2nd grade of Elementary School was a pedagogical strategy.

– Literacy needs to be a priority. It is a crucial phase for all subsequent learning, which is why we prioritize younger students. Incorrect literacy training has lifelong consequences. In addition, in-person classes will be complemented remotely. It will be a hybrid model. All of this is part of a gradual process – explained the secretary.

Gradual resumption
According to the Back to School Plan, in the second phase, scheduled for March 17, students from daycare centers (children of education and health professionals over 2 years old), 3rd to 5th grade, 6th experimental grade and 9th grade will partially return. In the 3rd and final phase, scheduled for March 31, other students from daycare centers, 6th to 8th grade, PEJA and Special Classes will return. As schools adapt to the rules, every Thursday the names of more units that will return the following Wednesday will be announced. The return is optional for students: it is up to the student's guardians to choose whether to return to in-person classes, if they are under 18 years old. Students of legal age will decide directly whether to return to in-person classes. Education professionals in risk groups must remain in remote learning.
