City Hall inaugurates the 300th Educational and Technological Gymnasium in the municipal education network.

The Municipal Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha, inaugurated, this Tuesday (March 17th), the 300th Educational Technological Gymnasium, the GET Olympic Medalist Thiago Braz, in Santa Cruz. The new unit expands the offer of innovative public education to 976 more students, reaching 125,000 throughout the city. The goal this year is to reach 350 GETs, totaling 150,000 children. By the end of 2028 there will be 500 GETs.

– Inaugurating the city's 300th GET is very symbolic. GET is the CIEP of the 21st century: the most innovative public school model in Brazil. It's a true revolution that is expanding throughout the city and has actively contributed to making Rio the capital that has advanced the most in the Ideb in the country, the national index that measures the quality of education. GET integrates different areas of knowledge and stimulates critical thinking and creativity in our students. And now there are 300 GETs in operation, consolidating this great transformation in our education – highlighted Renan Ferreirinha.

Technological gyms integrate different areas of knowledge and stimulate critical thinking, sensitivity, creativity, and student leadership. The commitment is to expand the reach of active methodologies and further strengthen comprehensive education in different areas of Rio.

Recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC) as one of the best inspiring experiences in management and pedagogical projects in full-time education in the country, the initiative consolidates Rio as the Innovation Capital and strengthens digital and media literacy in the municipal network. By integrating technology, creativity, and active methodologies into the curriculum, the GETs promote full-time education focused on student protagonism and practical learning, preparing students for the challenges of the future. They represent a new conception of the 21st-century school—spaces dedicated to didactic-pedagogical innovation, knowledge experimentation, and active collaboration between students and educators.

 

The Technological Educational Gymnasiums adopt the STEAM approach — an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics — and reinforce the network's commitment to comprehensive education. Launched in March 2022, the model seeks to expand the development of skills and abilities aligned with contemporary demands. In these units, students have the opportunity to develop interdisciplinary projects that go beyond the textbook, using maker labs equipped to stimulate creativity, experimentation, and hands-on learning, with a direct impact on the school's surroundings.

Each unit boasts modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment. In the collaborative environment, students develop projects using artificial intelligence, 3D printers, laser cutters, projection glasses, robotics kits, and even sewing machines. The goal is to bring technology and knowledge closer to the daily lives of families and strengthen the relationship between schools and their communities.

GET Mobile

At the same event, the GET Mobile was launched, which will bring hands-on learning and GET technologies to other schools in the Rio de Janeiro municipal education network. In the GET Mobile, students, teachers, families, and the general public will be able to experience technological maker education through hands-on activities in the van and workshops at schools, as well as visit an exhibition of maker projects created in the network's GETs. The idea is to engage students, train teachers, and stimulate innovation in pedagogical practices.

Award from the Ministry of Education: Inspiring Experience

The Technological Educational Gymnasium (GET) was selected as one of the best Inspiring Experiences in Management and Pedagogical Projects by the Ministry of Education. GET was recognized in four categories: exchange network, narrative notebook, experience map, and national exhibition. The MEC initiative seeks to value and give visibility to practices that strengthen full-time education throughout the country.
