City Hall begins the school year for the municipal education network

Mayor Eduardo Paes and the Municipal Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha, participated in the first day of the school year on Monday (07/02). When classes resume, activities will be 100% in-person. All schools have been prepared to receive students and have also started delivering uniforms and teaching materials.

– The priority here in the city of Rio de Janeiro, since last year, has always been to keep schools open. There is nothing more important than that. One of the negative effects of the pandemic was that children spent the entire year of 2020 without classes. Last year, we resumed classes, but still with many people in hybrid learning, which is not the same. We now have lost time to make up for. Our education system is exceptional, it works very well and has dedicated professionals. I am sure that this year will be a period of great learning – said Mayor Eduardo Paes, at the Pedro Ernesto Municipal School, in Lagoa.

There are 1.543 teaching units and almost 670 thousand students (669.504) served in the municipal network, from nursery to elementary school. The return to classes is the result of an operation that was planned since last year, with the assessment of the network's needs, carrying out bids, hiring and management for the delivery of teaching materials and uniforms.

– I am very happy to welcome our students and all education professionals. We have worked hard over the past few months to ensure that the educational kits and handouts could be here today. In addition, we are resuming in-person activities while strictly following all health protocols, which include the mandatory use of masks in schools and constant hand washing, among other measures. Nothing can replace school, which is the safest and most appropriate place for a child to be – stated the Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha.

Parents and students celebrate return to in-person classes

Parents and guardians did not hide their satisfaction with the full return of in-person teaching in municipal schools. Radiology technician Débora Vieira Ribeiro emphasized that her son Samuel, aged 6, learns much more efficiently at school than with the remote activities he does at home.

– It is a great joy to see the children returning to school, because learning is always better in the classroom than at home. Here, they can exchange knowledge and experience with other children. Samuel was vaccinated against Covid-19 on Saturday and did not feel anything. Therefore, I am calm about his return to school – highlighted the mother.

Samuel, who will be studying the first year of Elementary School at Pedro Ernesto School, was happy to return to the classroom. Still outside, the boy seemed eager to meet his new classmates.

– I like making friends, I'm really happy to be back at school. It seems like this one is really cool. I hope it's really good.

 

 

Uniforms

In terms of uniforms alone, almost two million shirts, more than one million pairs of shorts and more than 600 sneakers will be delivered. This school year, each student will receive three shirts, two pairs of shorts, five pairs of socks and one pair of sneakers. Deliveries will be completed by March. The new addition is the return of shorts and socks, which were not offered in recent years.

To ensure that students and teachers have all the appropriate materials for classes, more than 600 school kits are being delivered specifically for each teaching group. The items offered include: A4 paper, crayons, modeling clay, paint, brushes, erasers, pens, glue, scissors, pencil sharpeners, graphite pencils, colored pencils, rulers, and notebooks.

 

 

Rioeduca Material

Rioeduca's material for 2022 has many new features. The books and pedagogical notebooks were prepared entirely by teachers from the municipal education network and will be distributed to all students.

To encourage learning, the content of the books highlights the culture and people of the territories where the students live. The teaching material was enriched with photos and information, for example, from leaders of social projects and writers from Rio de Janeiro who were born in communities. Students from municipal schools also illustrate the pages, in an initiative to help children recognize themselves in their books.

The chapters feature characters created by Multirio, with different genders, generations and skin tones, contributing to a diversity of identities. In addition, they all have names and stories, which makes the material more human. Another difference is that, instead of focusing on the city's best-known brands and tourist attractions, the new books give voice to stories from neighborhoods in the North and West zones that were previously unknown.

 

 

New vacancies in daycare centers

One of the main results of the work carried out in the first year of management was the opening of more than eight thousand daycare places, increasing the capacity to serve 92 thousand children this year. In just one year of management, the SME has already managed to open more daycare places than in the last four years of the previous management.

Learning recovery

The Department of Education has also worked over the last few months focused on planning for the recovery of learning and offering alternatives for children to stay in school for longer. The Vacation School program, for example, was the starting point for this policy that offers learning, fun and connects children even more with school.

Reinforcement River

Reforço Rio is one of the strategies that aims to recover children's learning through various measures, also offered after school hours. One of them is the designation of specific times in the timetable for the implementation of the remedial and reinforcement work.

– Expansion of the workload outside of school hours, aiming to reduce the learning gap.

– Five hours of weekly tutoring for 75 students.

– Support from teachers and interns, in face-to-face or remote classes.

– Individualized plan prepared by the student’s teacher based on diagnostic assessments.

– Regrouping of students at the beginning of the school year according to their learning level.

– Teachers and interns will receive training and teaching materials specific to this action.

Curricular prioritization

To reinforce and recover content that was not sufficiently covered last year due to the pandemic, the Department of Education opted for a curriculum prioritization model, which is an educational practice approved by UNESCO. It is a way of working on focal skills applied in previous years during the current year, which are necessary for the successful continuation of learning.

In each of the four semesters of this year, the current year of 2022 will be worked on, as well as skills and content offered to students last year, but which still need to be reviewed for the good continuation of student learning.

Full-time education

This year, the SME will continue to increase the number of schools offering full-time education. The goal of the Education Department is to reach 50% of students studying full-time by 2024. The plan, which includes restructuring the network, foresees an increase of over 100 thousand students studying full-time by 2024.
