For the 40th anniversary of the International Book Biennial, the City of Rio will actively participate in the event, at Riocentro, from this Friday (01/09) until September 10. The municipal departments of Education and Culture will have stands at the fair, with an extensive free program. In addition to institutional participation in the Biennial, the city encourages visitors to use public transportation to get to the Biennial. To this end, it has prepared a special BRT service to serve passengers who choose to attend the event using public transportation.
The Municipal Department of Education has set up a 150 m² space at the Bienal to welcome over 30 students and teachers from the school system, as well as visitors, over the ten days of the event, with a varied program designed for all ages. It will be a space to discuss topics such as innovation and technology, and the connection between education and other areas of the city.
Visitors to the stand will be able to learn about the experience of implementing the Experimental Technological Gymnasiums. The students from the GETs prepared games based on characters and environments from literary works, showing that it is possible to combine technology with the environment of books. Other actions by the Secretariat will also be present at the Biennial. All municipal schools will receive vouchers between R$800 and R$1.400 to use to purchase new books and teaching materials for their libraries.
The SME space will also welcome other departments and municipal agencies to discuss cross-cutting issues related to education. CET-Rio will showcase the project “On the Road to School 2.0,” which develops traffic education actions and implements urban interventions around educational institutions to improve organization and safety on the way home from school. Comlurb will bring to the Biennial the project “More Conscious School,” which raises awareness about correct disposal, urban cleaning, selective collection, respect for the environment and public spaces, using music, theater, good humor and high spirits as means of raising awareness. The Department of Science and Technology will present the training work carried out by the Naves do Conhecimento.
Passion for Reading pays tribute to black Brazilian writing at the Biennial
The Municipal Department of Culture will bring the project Passion for Reading to the 2023 Biennial, with the theme “Imagination, Writing and Word: Freedom”, which pays homage to black Brazilian writing through authors such as Lima Barreto, Luís Gama and Carolina Maria de Jesus. The Culture space at the Biennial will have lectures, debates, recreational activities and workshops focused on this theme.
Paixão de Ler will not be limited to the Biennial, but will also be present in 14 places dedicated to reading in the city, where the meetings will be completely free. At the Biennial, the Paixão de Ler stand will debut with Roda de Jongo, by the artistic collective as MariAmas, which will also launch its book. The full Paixão de Ler 2023 schedule, inside and outside the Biennial, can be seen on the website cultura.prefeitura.rio/paixao-de-ler.
BRT will have a special transport scheme for the Biennial
Mobi-Rio has set up a special operation for the BRT public until the 2023 Book Biennial, which will be held from September 1 to 10 at Riocentro. On the weekends of the event and on the September 7 holiday, when a larger audience is expected, a special service (SE010) will operate from 9 am to 21 pm, departing from the Paulo da Portela Terminal in Madureira to the Recreio Terminal, stopping at the Olof Palme station, closest to the entrance to the Biennial. There will be additional buses, which will leave every 10 minutes, on lines 50 (Jardim Oceânico x Centro Olímpico), 51 (Recreio x Vila Militar) and 41 (Madureira x Recreio – Expresso).
Boarding for the Book Biennial, departing from the Jardim Oceânico, Recreio, Paulo da Portela and Centro Olímpico terminals, as well as the Morro do Outeiro station, will have special signage for the public taking the BRT. MOBI operators will also be at these locations to guide passengers.

CET-Rio will operate with a team of 50 traffic operators
On Saturdays, Sundays and the public holiday of September 2, 3, 7, 9 and 10, when the expected number of visitors to the Book Biennial is highest, Pedro Calmon Street will be closed between Salvador Allende Avenue and Abrahão Jabour Street, from 8 am to 23 pm. To minimize any impact on traffic in the region, a specific traffic operation will be implemented, with 50 people per day, including CET-Rio employees and contracted traffic operators, who will work to maintain fluidity, prevent illegal parking, organize intersections, and guide pedestrians and drivers.
Also with the aim of ensuring the flow of traffic, CET-Rio technicians located at the Rio Operations Center (COR) will monitor the event through cameras and, if necessary, traffic light adjustments will be implemented. 14 variable message panels will be used to inform about traffic conditions and detour routes.
During the event, it is recommended that drivers in the region use the Avenida das Américas/Avenida Ayrton Senna route to connect to Linha Amarela due to possible overload on vehicle traffic on Avenida Salvador Allende and Avenida Embaixador Abelardo Bueno.
Municipal Guard will work with 40 guards per day in support of the Book Biennial
The Rio Municipal Guard will work with 40 officers per day to support the Book Biennial. Urban planning and traffic control actions will always begin two hours before the gates open and will continue until the end of the event and the public has left.
The officers will be strategically positioned at all entrances to the Riocentro pavilions to assist the public and also to prevent disorder and petty crime. In traffic, the officers will focus on fluidity and mobility, including assisting pedestrians who will use public transportation to get to the location. The officers will also have the support of five vehicles for emergency situations and support for the officers.
Comlurb will have a special cleaning operation at Riocentro
Comlurb will be carrying out a special cleaning operation during the Book Biennial. Lovers of a good book will have the support of the Company in keeping the external area of Riocentro and the access roads to the pavilions clean throughout the event. In total, eight street cleaners will be working on sweeping and waste collection services, four from 7 am to 15 pm and another four from 15 pm to 22 pm. A compactor truck will dispose of the waste generated correctly.
