Second edition of the Young Citizen of Rio de Janeiro Contest awards students from municipal schools with smartphones

The Rio City Hall, through the Rio City Attorney's Office and the Municipal Department of Education, held this Monday (4/11), at the Palácio da Cidade, in Botafogo, the awards ceremony for the 2nd edition of the Young Citizen of Rio Contest, developed with students from the 9th year of Elementary School Final Years.

With the theme “Education of Rights as an Instrument of Citizenship”, the competition was inspired by the proposal of the Municipal Policy of Digital Inclusion. 82 essays were received and 33 students who wrote the best works written in class were awarded with smartphones, medals and diplomas.

– It is always a joy to carry out this project aimed at young people from municipal schools. Citizenship, so important to ensure rights, can be seen in the texts that have also graced us with the good writing of these young authors and citizens in formation – said Daniel Bucar, the city’s attorney general, highlighting that this is “the happiest day for the Attorney General’s Office”.

The essays were corrected and selected by a specific committee made up of representatives from both bodies. Among the criteria observed for the selection of the 33 texts were creativity, originality and vocabulary, among others.

Municipal Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha highlighted the special partnership between the Department of Education and the Municipal Attorney's Office:

– What we want to convey is a much better future prospect for these students. To show them that they can be city attorneys, teachers, doctors… they can be whatever they want. But to do that, they need to work hard. Our role is to guarantee opportunities. Their role is to dedicate themselves. It is great to have an institutional partnership between two very important organizations in favor of our youth, our children.

Last year, in the 1st edition of the competition, the theme was “458 years since the Foundation of the City of Rio de Janeiro: in which city do I want to live?”.

Agatha Paula, 9, a 15th grade student at the Mário Paulo de Brito Municipal School in Irajá, was thrilled with the award: “I didn’t know how to write essays properly, but with this contest, I started practicing at home. I had difficulty at first, but then I managed to write.”

Beside him, Isabela Silva, 15, from the Amazonas Municipal School in Campo Grande, also couldn’t hide her joy at the result: “I never imagined I would win. The teacher convinced me to participate and, when I found out I had won, I jumped for joy,” she said.
