- City Hall agents carry out awareness-raising action with bus drivers about the rights of the elderly
The agents were on Rua Dias da Cruz, in Méier, carrying out the awareness campaign - Disclosure Teams from the Department of Healthy Aging and Quality of Life, with support from the Municipal Guard and the Department of Transportation, were on Rua Dias da Cruz, in Méier, this Wednesday (21/05), carrying out an inspection and awareness-raising operation among drivers and passengers about the rights of the elderly. The agents were at the same bus stop where, this week, an elderly woman had to beg to board the bus on route 606 (Engenho de Dentro x Rodoviária), operated by the company Rodoviária Matias, while holding on.
The scene was filmed by pedestrians and the video circulated on social media showing the elderly woman trying to board the moving vehicle with the doors closed. From the footage, she claims that she was at the stop and that the driver drove right past. Only after realizing that the situation was being filmed did the driver allow the passenger to board.
As soon as they learned of the case, a team from the department went to the Matias Bus Station to demand explanations and demand an investigation into what had happened.
– We notified the company yesterday that it has already penalized the driver in the case. We will not tolerate this type of behavior in the city of Rio. Today we are here in Méier raising awareness among drivers and passengers about the importance of education and safety for the elderly in traffic – says Secretary Felipe Michel.
Focused on Yellow May, the month of raising awareness to reduce traffic accidents, this action is part of the Elderly Rights Operation, which takes place daily on the city's streets.
