Athletes from the Mangueira Olympic Village win 21 medals in marathon swimming

The students from Vila Olímpica da Mangueira stood out in the 2nd Open Water Swimming Challenge, held at the Funil Reservoir, at the Clube Náutico de Resende, last weekend. The team won 21 medals in the competition, eight of which were gold.

– The swimming team at Vila Olímpica da Mangueira has been increasingly consolidating itself in open waters. It is a great joy to see the athletes from our sports facilities standing out in major competitions. It is a sign that the work is being done well – says the Secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.

The Olympic Village had the participation of 34 athletes and won eight gold, six silver and seven bronze medals. There were many highlights in the competition.

In the 1,5 km race, Jessica Nascimento came in third place overall; Maria Luyza Barros was champion in the 20 to 24 age category; Letícia Amorim was champion in the 15 to 19 age category and Hemilly Gomes came in third place. In the 750m race, Mariana Ribeiro came in second place in her category, Milena Ácimo de Souza won bronze, as did Ester de Souza and Luciana Macedo. In the men's 1,5 km race, Marcos Silva was champion in the 20 to 24 age category and Miguel Luiz was runner-up in the same category.

In the same category, Luiz Miguel was champion and Cristian Felipe dos Santos de Souza was runner-up. Arthur do Vale came in third place in the 15 to 19 age group and Felipe de Sousa came in second place in the 10 to 14 age group. João Gabriel Silva also came in second place in the same category. In the men's 750m race, Luiz Felipe Souza da Costa was champion in his category, as were Luiz Antônio Macedo and Roberto Macedo. Daniel Soares was runner-up and Jonathas Almeida came in third place. In the 100m race, the youngest João Paulo Ribeiro was champion in the under-10 age group.

Teacher Danuza Siqueira, who started forming the team in 2016, also competed, finishing in second place. She spoke proudly about her students' participation.

– This is the second time we have swum in the Funil Dam and once again we have had great results. The girls’ participation stands out, as they have improved significantly. Jéssica Nascimento won the overall podium in the 1,5km race and Mariana Ribeiro, just 11 years old, won the podium in her category in the 750m race. In the first stage, Mariana was very scared and I had to accompany her throughout the race. This time she overcame herself and I was able to complete my race without any worries, winning the podium for second place in my category – said Danuza.

A standout in the competition, Jéssica Nascimento began swimming at the Vila Olímpica da Mangueira when she was still a child, at approximately seven years old. Today, at 19, the athlete celebrates her achievements.

– It was wonderful to participate in this competition. It’s a feeling that you feel and you don’t want to stop feeling. I never imagined that I would be able to come in third place overall. Swimming is my passion and I go to have fun, but I also can’t deny that getting a great result for me and my team is very important. Being able to test my limits – said Jéssica.

Excited about her achievement, Jéssica is already hoping to return to the competition next year. “If it weren’t for my teacher, Danuza, this wouldn’t be happening. Next year, we’ll do everything we can to participate again and have the same feeling I had on Sunday.”
