Athletes from Vila Olímpica da Mangueira reached the podium four times at the Rio Loterias Caixa State Under-23 Athletics Championship in Niterói. They won one silver medal and three bronze medals. The competition was held last weekend, March 22 and 23, at the Aída dos Santos Sports Complex at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF).

– The Mangueira Olympic Village is a reference, and the athletics team is very good. Great athletes have emerged there, such as Gabriel Constantino, who participated in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Seeing the new generation standing out in competitions is a source of immense pride – said Sports Secretary Guilherme Schleder.

Eight athletes from Vila Olímpica da Mangueira participated in the championship. Luis Felipe Moreira won two medals individually. He was runner-up in the 400-meter race and third in the 200-meter race. The team also won two bronze medals in the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay.

Teacher Iracema Rosa Gonzaga was very proud of the athletes' performance. She has experienced this and knows well the importance of sports and competitions in their lives. Iracema started at the Olympic Village at the age of 14, got a scholarship to college because of her athletics, became an intern and then a teacher. Today, she teaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays and encourages the young people in their competitions.

– It’s a wonderful experience. It’s very rewarding to know that the work done at Vila is paying off. Our team was all in a category below in this competition, as they are under-18, and even so they did very well. Sometimes they feel tired, they feel pain, but when they get on the track they give their best and the results come – said Iracema.

The athletes continue training with an eye on the upcoming competitions. At the beginning of April they will compete in a speed, jumping, throwing and throwing event.
