Athletes from the Vilas Olímpicas of Mato Alto and Vila Kennedy win ten medals in the Brazilian Karate Championship

Athletes from Vila Olímpica Professor Manoel José Gomes Tubino, better known as Vila Olímpica do Mato Alto, and Vila Olímpica Jornalista Ary de Carvalho, in Vila Kennedy, won ten medals at the Brazilian Karate Championship. The competition, held by the Brazilian Karate Confederation (CBK), took place between November 7 and 12, at Ibirapuera, in São Paulo. The result helped Rio de Janeiro to be fourth in the overall ranking by state, with 13 golds, 10 silvers and 17 bronzes.

 

– Seeing athletes from our Olympic Villages achieving such important achievements in national competitions is very gratifying. This further reinforces how worthwhile the investment made in sports is – stated the municipal secretary of Sports, Francisco Bandeira.

 

Four medals were won from the Vila Olímpica in Vila Kennedy. João Pedro dos Santos was champion with the junior team, and Derik Barbosa won bronze in the individual senior category and bronze with the under-21 team. Another person who made it to the podium was volunteer teacher Adam Ramos, who has been working at the Vila Olímpica for 5 years.

After suffering a serious injury in December of last year, the professor did not expect to return to competition so soon, but he managed to make a quick recovery, returned to fighting 5 months ago and won silver at the Brazilian Championship. He said it was a difficult period, but even after surgery he continued to teach and encourage students in competitions.

 

– I have always believed and had faith in my students. They have been training with me since they were white belts, when they were little kids, and it is really cool to see their progress. João Pedro, for example, got a spot on the Brazilian youth team after his results in the qualifying round in Uberlândia – said Adam Ramos.

 

Of the seven athletes from the Mato Alto Olympic Village who participated in the championship, six won medals. Filipe Alberto and Juliana Oliveira were champions, Kelly Fernandes won silver, and Isabela Rodrigues, Murillo Maduro and Luiz Fernandes won bronze. The team was supported by coach Mauricio Santiago, who has been a teacher at the Village for 12 years and is the coach of the Brazilian adult karate team.

 

 

– Our participation was great. We managed to win six medals and have two Brazilian champions, including Filipe, who has already competed for a spot in the Olympic Games. With the results, we hope that the four athletes from Vila who were previously part of the Brazilian team can return – said Mauricio.

 

The professor also emphasized the importance of these athletes for the more than 100 students at Vila Olímpica do Mato Alto, who take classes with him on Wednesdays and Fridays.

 

– This karate team began to be formed in 2014 and they are a role model for the other students in the Village, serving as an incentive for them to continue training and soon be able to participate in competitions as well.

 

The karatekas continue to train hard, focused on the upcoming challenges. Filipe Alberto and Juliana Oliveira, from Vila do Mato Alto, and Adam Ramos, from Vila Kennedy, are participating in the Santa Catarina Open Games, which will run until this Sunday (20/11), in Rio do Sul, Santa Catarina.
