A partnership between the municipal departments of Sports, Environment and CET-Rio will allow the creation of two new Areas for the Protection of Competitive Cycling (APCC) in the city of Rio. The first of these was inaugurated this Thursday (15/04), in Madureira Park, in the North Zone. The date commemorates International Cyclist Day. Another exclusive area for training is in the final stages of approval and will be in the Deodoro Radical Park.

There are currently three APCCs in the city: Aterro do Flamengo, Praia da Reserva and Porto Maravilha. These are blockades created to ensure safety and proper practice of the sport. In Parque Madureira, the APCC Danilo Diver – a tribute to José Danilo da Silva, one of the greatest defenders of the fight for the protection of cyclists and who died in May of last year, a victim of Covid-19 – will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4 am to 5:30 am.

– It is yet another union of forces between the City Hall departments to provide security for sports practitioners in the city of Rio – says the Secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.

The final details for the creation of the space were agreed upon last weekend, with the municipal secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavalieri, the president of CET-Rio, Simone Costa Rodrigues, as well as representatives of the Cycling Safety Commission of the City of Rio de Janeiro (CSC-RJ).

– This is a long-standing demand from cyclists in the region. We will have all the logistics in place to ensure that they have the greatest possible safety – commented Eduardo Cavalieri.

– The APCC in Parque de Madureira will have all the expertise used in other areas of the city – added Simone Rodrigues.

The achievement was celebrated by cyclists, who gained a new space with total safety.

– It is a unique opportunity for the region, which was lacking a specific sports area for cyclists – stated Miguel Lasalvia, president of CSC-RJ.
