  • Rio 2024 Marathon starts this Thursday with record number of registrants: 45 thousand runners
The marathon was a success last year - Rio City Hall

The largest street racing festival in Latin America, the 22nd Rio Marathon 2024 will be held starting this Thursday (30/5) and promises to liven up the city with three days of races. There are 45 thousand athletes, a record number of registered athletes, in four distances: 5 km, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km. According to the event organizers, 81% of the runners are from outside Rio de Janeiro. There will also be the Desafio Cidade Maravilhosa, a 63 km race held on Saturday and Sunday (1[ and 2/6), in which participants have to run 21 km on one day and 42 km on the other.

– The Rio Marathon is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated events of the year in the city. I am very happy that the Municipal Department of Sports is once again supporting the largest street racing festival in Latin America. Athletes from abroad and all over Brazil are competing in the races with great energy, determination and, of course, total safety. Many tourists come to the city, jobs are created and the economic impact is wonderful – says the Secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.

To make the races more fluid and more comfortable for runners, the courses for three of the four distances have been improved. Only the 10 km race will keep the same layout as in 2023. The marathon, for example, has changed the first 15 kilometers in the downtown area of Rio, and the start of the new route is largely the same as the 2016 Olympic Marathon. The half marathon's start has been moved from the corner of Rua Bartolomeu Mitre, in Leblon, to Jardim de Alah, to accommodate and provide more comfort for the large number of registered runners. The 5 km race has gained a completely new, wider and faster route, all between the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and Praça Cuatemoc, in Flamengo.

– The natural exuberance, the mobilization of the city and public authorities and the artistic attractions enhance the participants’ experience – believes Jued Andari, Sports Director at Dream Factory, one of the organizers of the Marathon.

– If we count the runners’ companions, we reach 120 thousand people experiencing the Rio Marathon – highlights João Traven, founder of the Marathon and partner of Spiridon, the other organizer of the event.

Runners will be able to return to their homes and hotels by taking the subway for free at Glória station. To do so, they just need to wear a Marathon T-shirt and ask a MetrôRio employee for permission to enter at the turnstile. The times to use this benefit will be as follows: Thursday (30/5), from 17 pm; Saturday (1/6) and Sunday (2/6), from 8 am.

The Marathon will be broadcast live on ESPN 2 and Star+, on streaming. The start will be at 5 am. For more information, visit the website marchaadorio.com.br.
