Olympic athlete Ana Sátila is one of the participants in the competition - Theo Theodoro/City of Rio Starting this Thursday (23/1), Deodoro Radical Park will host the National Selection for Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross. The competition will run until Sunday (26/1) and will feature the participation of big names in the sport, such as Olympic athlete Ana Sátila, three-time Pan American champion in the women's C-1 canoe slalom. Athletes from all over Brazil will compete in a marathon of events in the Junior, Under-23 and Senior categories. Deodoro Park hosted the BMX, canoe slalom and mountain bike competitions at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
– The Radical Park has become the home of canoeing and it is really cool to host these events and keep the Olympic legacy alive. We not only have big names in the sport, such as Ana Sátila and Pepê Gonçalves training here, but we also work on training new athletes, offering a school for the sport, in partnership with the Brazilian Canoeing Confederation – said the municipal secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.
With four Olympic participations, Brazilian Ana Sátila is excited about the competition and gets emotional when talking about Parque Radical, where she carries out her training.
– This competition is also worth world rankings, so it is very important. It is a great source of pride to see that the Deodoro Radical Park is a global legacy and serves as a mirror for many Olympic venues. This place is incredible, not only for high-performance athletes like me, but also for the people of Rio de Janeiro.
The facility of the Municipal Department of Sports has one of the best canoe slalom tracks in the world and, in addition to being the setting for major competitions, it houses a slalom school in partnership with the Brazilian Canoe Confederation. Classes, which are on hiatus during the Summer Camp, will resume in early February, but the project is already bearing fruit. Gabriel de Albuquerque Silva began practicing the sport there and has improved so much that he is already participating in the national selection.
– I have been training here at Parque Radical for a while now and it has been my home, my second home. It is a very good preparation, I feel ready for this competition, which is one of the most important ones, because it determines who will represent our country in international competitions and other championships that are coming up. Here at the Park we have one of the best tracks in America and top 5 in the world, so having the opportunity to train in this space is incredible. I have no words to describe this place.
Professor Beatriz Motta will also compete.
– I am very happy to be able to teach this sport that I love. This track is one of the best in the world. There is no other like it in Brazil, especially for beginners. I am proud of my students and I believe that many high-performance athletes, Brazilian and Rio de Janeiro champions, will come out of this track. I invite everyone to get to know the sport.
In parallel with the Brazilian qualifiers, canoeists from other countries will compete in the ICF Ranking, events that add points to the international canoe slalom circuit for national and international athletes. This is an opportunity to get ahead in the ICF points rankings for the 2025 season.
