The marathon was a success last year - Rio City Hall

In partnership with Visit Rio and Riotur, the City of Rio, through the Municipal Sports Department, launched this Tuesday (18/2), at the Palácio da Cidade, in Botafogo, the city's official sports calendar. From now on, all legalized sports events will be gathered on a single website (https://visitrio.com.br/eventos-esportivos-no-rio-de-janeiro/), which will be constantly updated with confirmation of new activities.

This year, 350 events are expected to be held in Rio, of which 190 will be dedicated to street racing. According to projections by Visit Rio, which seeks to promote tourism in the city, 117 events in total are expected to attract around 690 thousand competitors, generating an estimated economic impact of R$2,2 billion. In 2024, Rio hosted 322 events, of which 78 brought together 452 thousand participants and caused an economic impact of R$1,4 billion.

— The launch of the calendar is an important step towards attracting more events and strengthening the sector in Rio de Janeiro. The work began in 2023, in partnership with Visit Rio, allowing for more transparent monitoring of the impact of events on the city. With a consolidated history of hosting major events, Rio continues to seek new opportunities to expand this scenario and reaffirm its leading role — said the municipal secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.

The calendar will be updated whenever events, whether of large or small economic impact, obtain permits to be held, a process that can be completed entirely on the Carioca Digital website (https://home.carioca.rio/). Among the highlights of 2025 are the Rio Open, Sail GP, Volleyball Nations League, Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championship and the Rio Marathon.

Sports have become one of Rio's main attractions for attracting events. In 2024, according to data from Visit Rio, of the 485 events that generated revenue and attracted tourists to the city, 16,05% were sports-related. The entertainment sector came in second place, with 15,84%, followed by the medical sector, with 12,14%.

— I was there looking at the photo of Christ and thinking: Rio de Janeiro is unique. Our Olympic city's vocation continues strong, hosting important events for those of us who live in the Olympic world. It is essential for the Olympic confederations to have this opportunity to host competitions. When we try to bring a championship to Brazil, they always ask: 'Is it in Rio?'. This shows the importance of the city in this scenario — highlighted the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Marco La Porta.

In January 2023, at the request of the Municipal Sports Department, Visit Rio mapped out 73 major sporting events that Rio could host by 2033. Some have already been secured, such as the 2027 Women's World Cup, as well as the Gymnastics World Cup, Rowing World Cup and Rainbow Six, scheduled for this year. Other events are still in the bid or negotiation process, such as the 2031 Pan American Games, the NFL and NBA games and the 2027 Table Tennis World Championship.

— Rio is an Olympic city, a rare and valuable title that we should cherish. Sports are a solution to many problems and have always been a strong characteristic of Rio, especially outdoor sports. We have great potential to host world events and have already achieved some, such as the candidacy for the Pan American Games in partnership with Niterói. Visit Rio, together with the city government, is working to attract major international sporting events by 2031 — said Carlos Werneck, CEO of Visit Rio.

Olympic champion in 1996 in beach volleyball, Jaqueline Silva celebrated the launch of the sports calendar.

— Rio is a city of sports, a place where people come and are delighted with the possibility of moving around and practicing sports, especially outdoors. The diversity of locations and sports available makes Rio truly charming. So, it is only fair that Rio, which has already hosted the Olympics and is now preparing for the Pan American Games, has an annual calendar of sports and events.
