The second day of the 'Sports Workshop – On the Road to Paris' brought together a large audience at the São Sebastião Administrative Center (CASS), headquarters of the Rio City Hall. The event aims to encourage the population to practice sports, with activities taking place every Thursday in June and July, from 11 am to 14 pm, until the eve of the world's biggest sports competition, the 2024 Olympics, which will be held in the French capital. In addition, the public can meet Olympic athletes who will be in Paris and compete for prizes. This Thursday (13/6), the public can participate in basketball, judo and table tennis activities. The event was attended by Paralympic judoka Brenda Freitas, who is part of Team Rio, a partnership between the Rio City Hall and the Brazilian Olympic (COB) and Paralympic Committees (CPB).

– The workshop is really cool, a big success. We weren’t expecting such a large audience. The idea is for people to reconnect with this sporting atmosphere before the Olympic Games. Last week we had two Olympic athletes with us, Laura Amaro and Amanda Schott, and today we had Paralympic athlete Brenda Freitas. We’ll be here every Thursday in June and July, with athletes from different sports. Different Olympic sports so people can get into this really cool Olympic atmosphere. And there are also people who work at the City Hall and also need to learn about new sports. To catch up on their lives. It’s really cool for them too – said the Municipal Secretary of Sports, Anna Laura Secco.

Paralympic judoka Brenda Freitas praised the initiative.

– It is very important to be at this event to encourage people to cheer and play sports. I am very happy to have this invitation and to be here representing my institute and Team Rio. It is very important because today people focus a lot on the Olympics and the Paralympics are sometimes left aside. So, the care the Secretariat has taken in extending this invitation to us is also essential to show people that we are strong – said the Team Rio athlete.

Athlete Osvaldo Pereira, who was once part of the Brazilian judo team and currently works at SMEL, helped teach the judo workshop.

– An event like this is essential for us to increasingly disseminate sports in Rio. Brenda is a Paralympic athlete and, like millions of Brazilians, dreams of succeeding in life through sports. She was only able to do this because there was a whole system and public policies in place to protect both professionals and athletes who want to be part of this Olympic cycle. I was an athlete and my life was transformed by sports. Today I can work with people who take this forward to help bring more examples of success in sports, like Brenda and Rafaela Silva – he said.

The public who participated in the workshops also approved the idea, like Giovani, who works in the elevator industry.

– This is very important for our health and relationships. I’m loving it. I learned to play table tennis for fun and I’ve played with my cousins and brothers since I was a child. I hadn’t played for a while and now I’m just remembering it. I’m really happy. Congratulations to whoever organized and promoted this event.

Another attraction that was a hit at the event was the presence of the Olympic torch from the Rio 2016 Games. Friends Livia Vieira and Caroline Cristina, who are bank employees, were delighted.

– I thought it was really cool and different. We don’t usually see things like this around here, having the opportunity to learn more about some sports. It’s an honor to see the Olympic torch, which has been so important to Rio since the 2016 Olympics – said Livia.

 – I saw that there are several days of events and that is really cool. My photo with the torch will be a hit on social media – said Caroline.

Marcus Vinícius, who works at the municipal Health Department, also enjoyed the event.

– It was good to break the ice a little bit at work. Seeing the torch in person is a pleasure. I wish there were even more initiatives like this. It’s good that people know more about the Olympic and Paralympic projects.

To participate, simply go to CASS, located at Rua Afonso Cavalcanti 455, in Cidade Nova, fill out the registration form and compete in the SMEL Challenge. The male and female champions of each day will receive a special prize.
